Competitive play when ping is unbalanced

Can you guys please explain to me how I am supposed to play competitively against a team from a Quebec server when I am on 65+ ping every time and I get frozen over 3 times a game and can’t move. I am wired and have 300 mps/ second. I would love to enter tournaments and play competitively but it’s impossible when I can’t even compete. Will anything ever be done to fix this? I play every other Xbox game on 15-20 ping and this is my favorite game but it’s getting really frustrating. Please someone from ea can you help?

  • Quick question- I have a fiber connection, am plugged in and in Los Angeles. Ping averages 40-60ms and absolute best is around 30. Speed test on PS5 is 600+ mb.

    Although it’s subjective, feels like there is occasional visible lag and often feels I’m slower in rivals and hut champs than most opponents.

    It would be great know if if there is further optimization I can do on my end or if is this is consistent with my proximity to Norbtern California or Texas servers.

    thanks!!

    @KidShowtime1867Good to know, so my point still stands they need to troubleshoot their servers 🤣

    haha yes, point still stands!

    Anecdotally, we've noticed a significant improvement since the addition of the North-North Central Server. At least I think that was one of the locations added in '23.

    Might be worth it to determine what server location is best for the majority of your teammates and go from there.

    @robweyd

    Your issue is the distance to the server, not your speed. The only way to reduce the ping is to reduce the distance between you and the server. If we ever get a server closer to you or if you move closer to the western server, the ping should drop.

    Are you sure the difference in speed isn't due to playing opponents with faster players and synergies that affect speed?

    As far as optimization goes, the biggest upgrade I had to my own connection was to get a good router with gaming features. They can be a bit pricey, but with the amount of online activity in my home, it's been worthy investment. Also, the cost is offset as well since you're not leasing the equipment from your ISP. They typically don't provide equipment that caters to gaming.

    Make sure you're using a premium HDMI cable. If you're on Xbox Series S/X or PS5, you should be using the cable that came with your system. Also, game mode should be enabled on your TV.

  • @EA_Aljo thanks for the quick reply. My team is pretty stacked (94/90) so there’s no disadvantage there.

    I’ll take a look at a gaming router, and if you could put a good word in for adding future bandwidth for the city of Los Angeles and Southern California it would be appreciated. 🙂

  • Unfortunately I don't think there's a fix for this - at least not one that EA can implement.

    The problem lies in the fact that the player-base for this game is extremely small and because of this, people are forced to play against opponents that are a significant distance away from them. At least that's the case when playing in P2P modes like OVP/HUT. EDIT: It seems people in this thread are talking about HUT as if it were using dedicated servers now? Is that true? What about OVP? I highly doubt it as my connection quality varies WAY too much from opponent to opponent when my actual internet is fine.

    Now, for modes that use dedicated servers (as I'm assuming EASHL/CHEL does), a possible fix would be to create more server locations. EA is probably following the old East/Central/West/Europe/Oceania model of old. This is a problem because those regions themselves are FAR too vast to provide decent connections for everyone in them.

    Let's say we have a team full of QC players and a team full of Central players (US or CAN): the game will likely choose either an East or Central server in this situation and one team will suffer from higher pings because of it. If there were more servers, in particular, a server IN BETWEEN these two locations, then both teams could play on fair ground and the average increase in ping for all 12 players would be lower.

    Just some thoughts.

    @EA_Aljo My guy. Did you really just pull out the "ISP Customer Service" routine and tell the dude to "make sure you're wired and power-cycle your router/modem!"

    I know you are trying to help (a little) but... you HAVE to assume that most of us who are fans of your game enough to come on your forum and make posts about it understand such basic things about online gaming. Have some faith in your audience.

    @NeonSkyline21

    HUT and WoC use dedicated servers. Online Versus games are still P2P.

    We can't assume that everyone has simple network troubleshooting knowledge so we always have to start with the basics.

    @Thelast1leftDude, I average a 750 mbps wired and still get it 3 out of 10 games where it's damn right unplayable. Think ea has to troubleshoot their servers.

    FYI - higher bandwidth doesn't mean you'll get better response times from EA's servers. You can have 100GBPS, military grade bandwidth and if your ISP routes traffic a certain way to where EA's servers are, you're still going to get the same response time as someone with a 100Mbit connection.

    Trust me, military grade internet isn't that good.. they have allot of problems.. I would know.. haha
