Has the player count really dropped so far that it's come to this? My concern is that prioritizing finding matches quickly at the expense of finding good matches is going to put the population into a death spiral. I can't see teams that legitimately belong in lower divisions sticking around and continuing to buy new games in the future if they exist solely to be fed into the meat grinder against opponents they really shouldn't be playing against. You get better by playing teams that are somewhat better than you, not teams that are essentially playing a different game.
I can see the impact of the matchmaking changes on my club too. Almost every year we end up winning around 65% of our games. Respectable, but I'd never pretend that makes us anywhere near an elite club. This year we're sitting at an 82% win rate. It's not because we've suddenly become that much better at the game, it's because now at least a quarter of our match-ups are against low division teams that realistically have no chance of winning the game. I can't imagine what it's like when they play an actually good team. And these match-ups happen quickly, often in less than ten seconds.
Finding bad matches quickly doesn't improve the experience for anybody IMO. The only people it serves are high-level clubs that enjoy stomping on low-level players. And frankly, I think the vast majority of high-level clubs would rather play against other good clubs that can provide fun, competitive games.
IMO the changes to matchmaking this year ( no rank/club level impact, removal of matching club size ) are going to have a long-term detrimental impact on the WOC mode.
