Methodology - Perception vs Reality
While we may think of Cole Makar or Rasmus Dahlin as Number 1 defensemen (and they are) the perception and the reality are two different things. There are 32 teams in the league, hence there are 32 number one defensemen, whether they measure up to Makar or Dahlins standards or not. 
The top 32 forwards average 92 overall
The top 96 forwards average 86.7 overall
the top 32 Defensemen avg 89.25 overall
Defensemen 33-64 average 86.1 overall
the top 32 goalies average 86.7 overall
goalies 33-64 average 82 overall
goalies 65-96 average 79 overall
