Please learn the rules of the game EA

In an unsurprising turn of events, it appears the team that works on NHL 26, or at least the officiating in the game, is quite confused on some of the simple rules of hockey. First, in goalie interference, the contact must be intentional. On multiple occasions I have seen goals called for back a player who is screening the goalie, while outside the crease, and the goalie then lunges forward and it is suddenly goalie interference, a crucial part of the goalie interference rule is it must avoidable or deliberate, which is often not the case, especially if the player is not in the goalie crease and the goalie lunges into the player. Icing is a very simple, yet EA seems to get it wrong about 50% of the time. I am unaware as to why, half the time, icing is not called when there is no clear reason for it to be waived. It also appears the referees in this game are confused on interference penalties, there is absolutely no reason why interference penalties should be getting called when players are in a scrum for the puck in the corners; a crucial part of the game of hockey, but in NHL god forbid you attempt to push a player who has the puck at their feet while trying to gain possession of the puck. Quite simply, this can be fixed by reading the rules of the game, countless officiating errors in this game, that I don’t recall existing when this game was actually good (more than 10 years ago). Please correct these simple issues of proper hockey rules in your hockey video game.

  • The dicrepances in the game have become a norm. Each year the complaint is multiplied, but  no attempt at addressing and fixing these issues.

Hey there. Thanks for the feedback. It's appreciated.

First, in goalie interference, the contact must be intentional.

We can't really read minds to tell if the interference was intentional or not. Besides, it doesn't have to be intentional. Players are often pushed or hit into other players.

On multiple occasions I have seen goals called for back a player who is screening the goalie, while outside the crease, and the goalie then lunges forward and it is suddenly goalie interference

I'll watch out for this, but if you can get a video, feel free to post it.

Icing is a very simple, yet EA seems to get it wrong about 50% of the time.

I see the occasional missed icing call. It's most definitely not 50% of the time though. It also normally happens when going from very deep in your own zone. Which, is entirely possible a real-world ref would waive off.

there is absolutely no reason why interference penalties should be getting called when players are in a scrum for the puck in the corners

These shouldn't be getting called as long as the puck is right by them. We'll need to review video so let me know if you get some.

but in NHL god forbid you attempt to push a player who has the puck at their feet

I push players very frequently that are away from the puck. I play D and am in front of the net shoving opposing players. If you do too many of these, you'll get a crosschecking call. Again, we'll need video to see what's happening.

I mean this is a prime example of simply not knowing the rules, please direct yourself to the NHL rule book rule 69.1 and it specifically lists when a goal should be disallowed, “Goals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, imparts the gaolkeeper’s ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal; or (2) an attacking player initates interntional or deliberate contact with a goalkeeper, inside or outside of his goal crease. Incidental contact with a goalkeeper will be permitted, and resulting goals allowed, when such contact is initiated outside of the goal crease, provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact.” This isn’t complicated to find. I am no NHL rule expert; I simply have a basic understanding of the game, and you can find the full NHL rule book online, as they publish it for free. I was not exaggerating the icing calls especially in EASHL 3s but it is also an issue in 6s, just there are generally less icing plays, it seems that whenever a pass is missed the game doesn’t feel like calling an icing, as if if you miss a pass it is no longer icing, I see this happen at least 5-6 times a game, which when you consider how many icing calls actually happen, ends up being roughly 50%. As for the interference in the corner, I assume you meant those shouldn’t be getting called, and I agree they shouldn’t, but they do. I unfortunately do not have video footage of these incidents because they happen so often, at least once a game, my console storage would quite simply be full of clips of the NHL video game not working.

I'm aware of the rule. What I mean is that we can't really accurately determine intent. Such as this part:

provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact.

Even real-world refs will make mistakes. I'm not going to claim our game will 100% make every accurate call. In the end, it's a video game and there are going to be times something unintended happens. The very high majority of the time, calls are accurate. The same goes for icing. You're always welcome to get video of missed calls. personally, I don't play 3s, but it's pretty uncommon to have a missed icing call in 6s. Icing can also be waived off by a ref and normally, when a call is missed, it's in a situation where opposing players are at the other end of the ice. So, it's not exactly inaccurate. Again though, we need to see video to know if there's a legitimate issue.

As for the interference in the corner, I assume you meant those shouldn’t be getting called

Correct. That's a typo. If interference is happening here, we need to see it.

If you understand the rule, don’t say it must be intentional in the message before, because that is not the case. I understand you can’t determine intent. The point I am making relates to my initial comment about the goalie lunging out at players outside the crease, causing a goalie interference when they have no reason to leave the crease. I think it is a fair request that something be looked at to try to figure out the root cause here, whether that be stopping the goalie from lunging out into players for no reason, when they don’t even have possession of the puck, or fixing it so that it doesn’t get called for goalie interference. I don’t think it fools anyone when the refs in EASHL pretend to review the goals and always come back with a no-goal call. I remember in earlier games, calls would actually differ, so I ask what technology was they used then that is no longer accessible? I also understand them missing calls from time to time, and no doubt there is less missed icing calls in 6s because there is more people on the ice to stop the puck from actually reaching the opposite end of the ice, or it at least gets close enough to a defender that it should be called off; but, in the 3s this is not the case and icing calls are constantly missed and that needs to be addressed, not waived off, but entirely missed; it never shows an icing warning and then goes away as if it was waived off, the warning was simply never there. I understand you want to see the concern of the interference and such, but I know I am not the first person to raise this concern, and I definitely won’t be the last; instead of constantly requiring clips, try listening to what the community is saying, testing it and determining if a fix is needed.

I've seen plenty of times they've come back with a good call. It's not always a no-goal decision.

I'll pass on the feedback for icing. If you get any videos, feel free to post them.

Can you please also pass on the goalie interference and regular interference calls, both are definitely issues in online game modes that many people have raised concerns with.
