Regarding the alternate tournaments, the method that a few of us have used is to start a new golfer, start it on the PGA Tour with no amateur season, and then skip straight to the tournament you wish to play. With having no career statistics for that golfer, it will be dumped into the alternate by default.
You can always play a couple of rounds of stroke play with the golfer to at least unlock a few skill points if you wanted, before playing the career event, as quick play doesn't affect career stats.
I know it's far from ideal, but it is a solution of sorts.
