Private match with friend cant change character

Has this happened to anyone else. I want to enjoy this game but so many bugs im reading and the most important one is if i start a private match with my friend and inv him he is stuck on his custom character. We found a fix someone mentioned on reddit about him starting a quickplay and going to the character select screen and then i inv him. But when he was in I couldnt see the character that he picked it was still his default character. Is there a fix to this do devs actively try to work out bugs ?
