I am having the same issue. It seems to be a problem on google side because 2 other of my games are giving me the same error (example Hill climb racing)……… The strange thing is that all my other games are logging to google without any issue. I just hope this gets resolved soon!

Ok I was getting mad at ea and google for not getting this fixed and I was worried I lost my save data anyway so I said to heck with it I completely uninstalled the game. I reinstalled it and when it loaded it let me sign into my google play name and then right after that the screen popped up saying google services aren't working or are missing or whatever but I noticed it said I had a new epic quest, also my file name was there. I clicked my file name then clicked play and bam all my stuff was restored. I dunno if this was the cloud or whatever but I'm so grateful it's back. This might work for others but try at your own RISK!!

My advice for all those with googleplay is 'DO NOT UNINSTALL PVZ2 AND THINK THAT IT WILL BE FIXED' until this is fixed. You will still be able to play the game regardless of the pop up, don't tempt faith by doing crazy things... But, if you want to do crazy things, I would suggest saving over EA cloud as well just in case the lucky goddess is not on your side and googleplay fail on you....

@Perfume-shroom92 i could not play my game when I opened it it was like my game reset I had to type in my age and stuff again then I clicked the Google play icon and it wouldn't let me sign in that error popped up. so if I tried to hit play it started me from square 1. All my data is back now tho and it seems to be working better than before. no restore purchases glitch and all my ads are playing properly.
Again do not try to uninstall and reinstall like me unless your sure you can get your data back. It might not work for you. I think I got lucky.!!
Lucky for you then. I experienced it last week and I reset - YES RESET my phone just to check on the problem. I was able to log in again but now I got logged out for the reason I don't know. I still try the reset thing but can't logged in anymore for 3rd day now.
I tried to logged in my account to other device here in our house and I was able to retrieve my data. But that phone is not able to play good anymore, at least I can see that I'm seeing my saved progress.
Not sure if the problem is about the device, the account, EA, or Google. I just hope they can fix it soon. And if anyone from you guys have any idea please share it to me as well. I need to work on my Arena as well.

I'm not getting the Google Play error message anymore
What I did was send in a request to EA Help asking to restore my account (show them your player ID), then log in/link your app/device using the cloud button on the bottom left where you have to type your registeren email, it will send a mail with verification code, enter that code and then I was logged back in with all my progress
I'm still getting the same message off Google.
OK!!! So I was able to solve the problem with google. It was really getting on my nerves as I was having the issue with 4 different games. It seems to be the google play service version that's having the problem. Even though I cleared all the data and try resetting all google play related apps problem was still there. So this is the version I had 20.06.16 (040408-296104215). I tried to uninstall updates but it wasn't possible and also the disable option was greyed out. You need to disable "find my device" to be able to make changes to google play services.
Google "how to fix google play services won't update issue" for instructions...…
After I uninstall updates, google play services was restore to version 17.4.55 (040400-248795830) which is working and syncing perfectly with all my games now. Obviously it will update to a newer version. I'm going to check if there is a newer version to the original version I had that doesn't give me issues and will post back.

Thanks for that, you can stop apps from auto updating if you change the phone settings.
I find it a good policy to only update the apps i use one at a time to try keeping those annoying ad pushing programs that Google torments us with at bay.

I agree here I keep mine set to notify me of updates but I turn off auto update. I always manually update. I manually updated Google play this last time not knowing they messed things up lol but yea always manually update.

I think my google play was updating today, and when I opened the game, something was updating/downloading too while booting. Alas, nothing seemed to change, the pop up is still there. My app seems to get slower, if anything, although barely noticeable (so maybe just my imagination). It forced close early after updating, twice, but now seems to be okay after restarting my phone.
Unintended force closing without the google play back up is worrying, since it was the reason of my progress lost years ago. I've now progressed a lot again from scratch, and even bought some cashmiums. Just traumatizing.
It seems to be FIXED!
No more pop-up for me, and the google icon bottom right corner also works now.

WHOA ZOMG
I just opened plants v zombies 2 and it loaded up and logged me into Google play and that service problem error didn't pop up!! I guess Google or EA fixed it behind the scenes. I'm glad it stopped.!!
