Character Upgrades - Basic Upgrades (Guide)
Hi everyone,
In this upgrade series, I am going to cover the different types of character upgrades for each character. In this series, I will be covering the basic upgrades, class-specific upgrades (Attack, Defend, Support) and character-specific upgrades, as well as a basic overview of how the upgrade system works.
This guide specifically covers the basic upgrades that all characters get, and have unlocked from the beginning. You do not need to take further action to obtain these upgrades, you begin with them. I will be covering different aspects of these basic upgrades, such as their point cost, what they do, their stat boosts, which situations they are worth using in and more. I use pages on the PvZ Wiki to assist me with the basic upgrade names and stats.
THE BASIC UPGRADES
These upgrades are automatically useable for every character without needing to unlock them, and there is no prerequisite to unlock them. It is just a matter of whether you want to equip them for each of your characters or not.
Rough Patch
This upgrade costs 1 point to equip. When you are vanquished 3 times in a row, you will respawn with slightly more than your current character's default maximum overhealth. Now, while overhealth you gain normally starts decaying within 10 seconds, with the Rough Patch's overhealth that you gain, it decays after 30 seconds instead. This upgrade also works if you are vanquished and then you get revived.
What situations this upgrade could be good to use in:
- If you are a new or inexperienced player.
- In your free-roam regions.
- If you like having additional health.
- Learning how to use a character effectively.
Refreshing Revive
This upgrade costs 1 point to equip. When you revive a teammate, including through a shared revive, your cooldowns for all of your abilities are reduced massively. If you are waiting for all of your abilities to recharge, using this upgrade and managing to revive an ally means you can turbo back your abilities faster, and you will likely refresh an ability back as well. Chip in to any revives you can if you run this upgrade to use your abilities much more frequently.
What situations this upgrade could be good to use in:
- You really like reviving.
- Your character has passive or regular abilities (or shields, high health, etc.) that help with reviving.
- Lots of allies keep being vanquished.
- Your character is fairly reliant on their abilities.
Levelling Up
This upgrade costs 2 points to equip. Any action that grants you XP gives you 10% more XP, if you would get over 5 XP originally, due to rounding. This works in all modes, but not for the XP Machine though, and it does not improve your bulb earnings either. It does work for character challenge XP quests. If your character is completely max level, unless you are doing a character challenge for XP with that character, it is not worth using this upgrade by any means. But if they are not max level, you can use this upgrade to level up your characters more quickly.
What situations this upgrade could be good to use in:
- Trying to level up your characters quickly.
- Getting other character upgrades faster.
- Rank up your account faster and legitimately.
- Completing character challenges.
Critical Blow
This upgrade costs 3 points to equip. When you vanquish an enemy with a critical vanquish, your cooldowns for all of your abilities are reduced by about 5 seconds each. Getting a critical vanquish involves getting a direct vanquish, not a shared one, and you have to deal a critical hit as the final blow as well. Your abilities get refreshed quite fast if you manage to achieve critical vanquishes and some characters automatically inflict critical damage upon all direct hits on enemies, such as Peashooter and Engineer, so they would benefit more with the upgrade.
What situations this upgrade could be good to use in:
- Characters that can easily inflict critical hits.
- Players who can easily land critical hits.
- Your characters that are fairly reliant on your abilities.
- If you aim more often for critical hits on your attacks.
Speedy
This upgrade costs 3 points to equip. This upgrade allows to gain a passive 13% movement speed boost (rounded up) which applies at all times, except when you are sprinting. When you use an ability that does not allow you to sprint or when you are attacking, this extra speed could be useful for reducing your chances of being hit, or to get closer to enemies as you do so. This upgrade is ineffective if you sprint a lot or if the ability you use makes you immobile.
What situations this upgrade could be good to use in:
- You are unable to sprint at the time, or your abilities are negated.
- When attacking during combat.
- When using abilities that do not allow you to sprint.
- When using attacks or abilities that slow your movement speed.
CONCLUSION
While these upgrades are quite basic, and do not provide tons of help, they can be freely equipped and unequipped as much as you like. These are good for newer or less experienced player with each character, to start them out with some useful upgrades. These upgrades can also be used to combo with other upgrades that your characters receive.
You cannot equip all of these upgrades at once, and each character has class-specific upgrades from the start, so consider which upgrades you think is best for you to use. What fits your playstyle. This upgrade system replaces variants in this game so be sure to make use of that.
Bye now, see you next time!
