Did you get value for money from GW2?

I stupidly purchased the digital deluxe version of GW2. Like all the digital purchases I have made over tha last year, I now regret this. I paid $109.95 for the digital delux version, mind you the standard version was $99.95 anyway. It was the same price in retail shops.

After playing the game now for over a month, I sort of feel a bit ripped off, I really dont think it's worth the standard pricing of $99.95. I think the price should really have been on par with GW, think it was around $49. GW2 really doesnt have that much more to justify the huge price hike. Indeed most AAA titles here usually are discounted to $69-$79 dollars on release (even though they should retail for $99). Technical problems aside with the game, does the backyard battlefield justify an additional $50. Sorry don't think so. Once you've done the single player tutorial (campaign) and wondered around the backyard, what's the point in continually doing it.

I played GW1 on and off for 2 years, certainly got my money's worth - this game I'm almost done with. Apart from all the stuff I probably won't unlock (with crappy drop rates and my dislike of infinity time), I'm finding less and less reason to return. Sadly, I have more interest now in returning to GW1, and after just a month that is a pretty big indictment against GW2.

  • $99 for the standard?!? Where the heck do you live???

In the US the standard ed. is $60. Or at least it was upon release, I saw on Amazon the disc version is down it $40, the same price GW1 retailed for.

In my case, when GW1 came out, even though I was very interested in it from the trailers, I still wasn't sure it was my kinda game, as I don't do shooters. So I ended up trading in a game to get it, and only paid like $3 out of pocket for the disc version. It quickly became one of my all-time favorite games, and easily my most played game....like EVER! I felt so guilty I only spent $3 for it.

I ended up selling my disc version so I could buy the digital version, just because I knew how much I was going to play it, and didn't want to worry about switching discs, whenever anything else came along. This was after GW1 had been out for awhile, so I only spent $13 for the digital version. But I swore when the next game out, I was going to happily pay full price for the game. I again wanted the digital version, so for the first (and after this, the only time) I spent $60 on a digital game.

Sadly, with all the issues this game has had, and that generally speaking, the game is lacking the fun factor from GW1, I can't say it was worth it. If I had gotten the enjoyment out of this game, like I did with the first one, I would have felt it was worth every penny, but it's just not the case.

  • thats why i called sony told them some bs story and got my 60 bucks back * * cap and there pile of * game tech issues server lag when there shouldnt be aka i have 50 ping at the worst of times terrible level design innability to * balance there gosh damn characters right and obvious lack of giving a * about the player base since they now only want people to tell them 3 characters to nerf and or buff which in of it self is a bad idea cause everyone well just tell them to buff the imp electro brainz ect more and we will continue to have this * issue of balance

nope im glad i got my 60 back this bs game can suck it im never buying another gw game that 60 is now happily in the pocket of square enix for there epic ff 15

I'll be the first to admit there are both technical and balance issues in this game. That being said it's still my favorite shooter game coming in just ahead of pvz1.
The first game was a gift at the price it was sold at and while it'd have been great if this game was equally priced
I think it was worth the $69.99 I paid for the deluxe edition at launch. Yalls are being a bit dramatic in your criticism imho.
  • No.

Having to wait for issues to be resolved in order to play the game for the specific reason i purchased it (multiplayer) is my biggest problem because it's in such a state that it's genuinely not worth playing to a degree where I actually enjoy it.

Although I am prepared to sit it out (I don't really have much choice) I have to ask the question as to how much the game will cost brand new when things are working to an acceptable level - so for that reason I don't ever believe GW2 will justify it's initial price tag.

The game itself (in terms of content) is actually quite decent and I dare say a lot will get a lot out of it, but for me personally the offline stuff was played in 'autopilot' simply because the online stuff was pretty rubbish. I actually powered it up last night for the first time in forever (lol, my XP multiplier is back at 1x ) and spent 15 minutes spending my 600,000 accumulated credits with very little desire to do anything else. So I guess that sums it up.

I had bought the Digital Deluxe version too, although it wasn't nearly as expensive are it was for you. Do you live in Canada or Australia? It was $80, and no I don't think in the end it was worth it at all. There's no season pass or anything which some games come with at the deluxe level, and I simply don't know what's in store for the future of this game in terms of updates or expansions. I like the game, don't get me wrong. I always liked the original too. It's a very unique game, and has some great ideas. But unfortunately some of these things are not fully fleshed out, and/or have bad bugs attached to them. The Infinity Time bug that crashes your game was so incredibly annoying. It happened several times in a row. Hours wasted with no reward or anything, and there's absolutely no word on that ever being fixed. None.

The unbalance of the new variants bothers me as well. I know they made all of the new classes and the new variants more powerful than a lot of the older ones to kind of prove that they have more to offer in GW2, and to make it "worth" the full price of admission. But in the end there are way more of the older characters than new, and that leaves a lot more characters not being played. Also they didn't even take the time to flesh out the new classes. All of the new classes only have 1 ability. They spent more time with the older characters when they made the first GW, and it cost less money. So I don't understand why such little effort was put in to the new classes. They all should've had multiple version of their abilities like the old classes so they could divvy up their ability's strengths.

I just think in the future for these guys, they should have a long term plan put out for the buyers so that they know that effort will continue to be put into it. It's being sold as a full price online shooter now. A lot of these types of games tell you that there will be frequent updates, or expansions.

And @Boris I agree with you. I've stopped playing the game like 2 and a half weeks ago because the multiplayer is just not in a state in which I think is enjoyable. I don't like how far the zombie team has been pushing in Turf Wars, and I simply don't like spawning in with zombies 5 ft away just waiting for me to leave the spawn area to get gang killed. It happens on Moon Base Z, zombies coming all the way to the hill and it's not fun at all playing a game when you can't advance at all. Same with the Academy level. They push right up to the fence with those ridiculous auto shotgun scientists, and I simply can't burst damage like the zoologist or computer scientist. Or Electro Brainz shooting his beam into the spawn area killing everyone whose close to someone else. I don't like that at all.

    Hellz nah.

This game could have been $30 and I still wouldn't have gotten value from GW2. The game is broken post-patch and according to everyone who's played it pre-patch says it was broken then too. Popcap should have paid me to play a broken game

  • It's definitely a very fun game but also riddled with slowly fixed bugs and balancing issues. There should've been a system where they can hotfix balancing issues whenever they want.

Despite all that, I'm still having tons of fun after 150-ish hours (not many games can do that for me, only BF3+4 and The witcher 3 in the last few years) and it was definitely worth it. (I don't buy games at 60$ though, $40 at online key shops right now  <3)

I pick my copy for PS4 for roughly £45. I feel I snagged a deal as some other places sold it for £50 up to around £60 at release. Honestly, I still do not feel it is fully justified as despite the design, the game seems rather unpolished with me finding glitches constantly as well as nearly being "online only" which is an obnoxious experience with imbalance, lag, poor design and the rest of the usual online package when most of the base tend to play for stats rather than objective and being rewarded for it. Do not get me wrong, I like this game but I could had honestly pooled my £45 to something bigger and more polished which is the whole point of this thread right?

Multiplayer annoys me because of several aspects and single player is not large at all mainly filled with fetch quests, ops missions and the lot. I think the price will be justified once PopCap releases the new contents in further patches such as new game modes.

Without these updates, this game would certainly get boring quick (which I am nearing that border of boredom).

Saying the game is "unplayable" due to balance issues is exactly what I'm talking about being over dramatic. I only play multiplayer on whichever side the game places me I've only swapped teams once when my friend I was playing with got placed on plants and me on zombies.
On release day roses tore me up and I considered complaining in one of the many threads up on the forum, but instead I just worked through the classes to find a counter. So for the next week or two to the patch I leveled most of my scientist variants almost entirely on killing roses.

After patch like I predicted on forums after rose nerf zombies ended up having the upper hand offensively. So since then to now I've worked on changing up plants to counter whichever zombie team I end up facing.

The balance is very close and with some minor adjustments to both sides this game will be near perfect. But if they end up gutting zombies, buffing plants, or both too much your going to end up with plants dominating every game and a forum full of complaints.

Less is more, minor tweaks and this game is gold.

I'm thinking maybe if multiplayer is such an "unplayable" experience for some of you maybe it's you and not the game.
