DLC Maps/Map Packs

While I dislike buying a game only to spend more money to fully unlock it, I would be happy to buy DLC maps/map packs occasionally.

I think maps should be obtainable in-game and we could use Rainbow Stars to purchase them.  The prices could fluctuate depending on the number of maps your're purchasing.  For example, a map pack could be released with 3 maps available and we'd have the option to purchase as many maps as we'd like:

  • 1 map = 1000 stars
  • 2 maps = 1500 stars
  • 3 maps = 2000 stars

Perhaps we could start off with a few map packs of GW1 and GW2 map remakes?

I think sales of maps would far supersede Legendary cosmetics and if we were allowed to exchange coins for Bulbs and Bulbs for Rainbow Stars, people would spend much more time in-game (even after completing the monthly prize map).  This would also allow EVERYONE (PvP and PvE crowds on all platforms) to play for the same prizes.  We could continue to have the option to buy Rux skins with Rainbow Stars, too, maps would just be additional content.

Optionally (an option we'd probably all prefer): sale maps for COINS and keep Rux items as is with Rainbow Stars.

Thoughts?

Agreed. I would rather they be free to all.

I think we would all want them free.  I just don't think the developers will be able to devote a team to continually create content for free.  Hope that makes sense.

EDIT:  I also mentioned the obtainable in-game part.

I’d buy new maps if they were cool.  I’m sorry but I don’t have the insight that most do.  And well thought out answers.  If I see something cool and looks like I’d enjoy it, then I would click purchase.  That’s just me.

@spIash_damage Loads of interesting ideas & good points!
I confess I wish they'd just make the customisation & currency offers better value & less complicated, then maybe more people would be tempted to take them up?

I'd much prefer new maps to be available to all, but am intrigued by the idea of earning them in-game . . . it could be turned into a long community event, like Tales of the Taco.
But that kind of thing would just get people playing rather than necessarily spending money, wouldn't it? So I probably haven't been much help, I'm afraid 🙁
  • Personally, I don't mind paying for content. I have purchased dlc in every game I own when it is available. With this game the player base is small and we are already losing a lot of the Holiday crowd. Some would purchase, more would play but we would still have the same problems. If they could fix the maps and modes we have now they could just bring in a few of the non hard coded GW2 maps and we would be great. The player base would then grow and we all would pay for dlc maps. There is just so much that needs to be done to current maps and modes now that more maps would create more problems. Without typing my thumbs away they basically need to need to review the GW2 play book and implement those successful map ideas to the current lay out. Lets do a topic on what needs to be done to the maps/modes now to make them playable. I would love to share my input and I think most would agree.

  • In regards to funding future content paid cosmetics seems to be good. I complained at first a lot actually but purchased everything in RUX to date. I even purchased the delux and two Holiday skins. Lol

Wow that was a lot of reading! Of course agree with the sentiment which is that this game needs new content to survive, but how can Popcap affordably provide that for a game with a fairly small player base. Even monetised map packs may not give them enough ROI when they could spend the time on other hopefully more mainstream projects.

The fatal error in my eyes was lack of promotion and hype building up to the game before launch. I don't know exactly how much marketing was done and where, just from my and other people's personal experience that this game came out of nowhere.

So now Popcap need to decide how much to invest and recover this situation. Three broad options...

    1) go large and provide tonnes of new content to keep existing players retained and attract new ones over time with good marketing and deals

    2) accept the ROI is limited and make a steady slow trickle of content for the fans while concentrating on other projects

    3) just let the game die. You made the money, learn the lessons and move on. Spend no more.

Feels at the moment they are going for option 2 which is reasonable even though we all here would love to see option 1.

Me too. I have a stupid amount of coins in GW2 for example, as I would occasionally buy coin packs just to show support for the game (and to buy a ton of sticker packs during boss hunts). The only things I've missed Rux's store so far are 2 gestures when I couldn't login to the game for a a little over a day. I also blitzed through a lot of coins in GW1 at times too.

There's no question some of us will buy pretty much everything they offer; I like supporting the PvZ games and have OCD (which is why I quit World of Tanks), but that's not universal. A lot of games have customizations for sale and it must work or you wouldn't see it as much as we do, but PvZ does a better job of it as some games want you to pay money for the dullest things ('ooooh, 5 bucks for a slightly darker uniform? I'll pass').

The marketing strategy does seem very odd and short sighted, makes you wonder really. When I was back in Scotland I did see TV adverts/commercials being played in October time-ish (which must have cost an absolute fortune) but not really much else on social media or anywhere else.

In terms of content and maps... well I think we all agree it is much needed... I am struggling to find enough things to do... and the rewards/currency system is so messed up that there seems little point in terms of reward for half the month.
In the end if things don't improve (actual things to do and the currency nightmare) I think even me (who doesn't play anything else) may be eventually bored into the ground.
Fingers crossed it all comes good in the end, I would be really disappointed to see this game fail and die ☹️
