How the hell do I play this?

I've played the linear versions of Plants vs Zombies on the Mac/PC and Android but not this or its predecessor. I've been given a copy of this game as a gift and I've been frustrated trying to play it because I can't seem to find anything that teaches me what the hell I'm supposed to be doing. Can anyone please tell me where or how I can access some kind of tutorial that explains things?
This was surprising to me as the first game did have a manual. But this is how you can figure stuff out. Press escape and press options. you will go to a little settings window with 4 tabs. These tabs are controls, audio, video, and miscellaneous. You will automatically be on controls. Click on customize controls and you will be brought to another screen listing the controls. You can also change the controls on here. The same goes for the other tabs. The audio tab controls the sound quality and the microphone, and the video controls the video quality, and miscellaneous has things like link data. In gameplay, if you are a plant, try to kil the zombies, and if you are a zombie, try to kill the plants. There are many playable characters, and each is different. You start out with 7 on each team and you can use in game currency to buy consumables, customizations, and "stickers". If you get enough matching stickers, you can unlock different variations of the original 7 characters you start out with.-note that there are special items that are exclusive to preorder, the deluxe edition or loyalty rewards. Also, some variations, known as the party varients, can only be unlocked by earning 25000 shards in infinity time, which is unlocked at the end of story mode. There is story mode for both teams, on plants, open the garage and talk to davebot, for zombies, talk to dr. patient. Additionally, there is an aiming reticle, which is a different shape for every class, but if there is a point in time where the reticle turns red, it means that if you shoot your bullet will do damage, so shoot at that moment. Also, some characters are fully automatic, and some are melee. The big thing near your spawn point is the multiplayer portal. Also, the baron von bats zombie boss and the vampire zombies can heal if they bite you, so try to stay away from them. For the all-star, hold down your firing button, as there is delay for him to start shooting. And always collect the golden gnomes, and there will be a secret! A good tip is to always press the mushroom buttons, and there will be a surprise! There may be a secret area, or a gnome!
Watch playthroughs on youtube and go from these tips, and trial and error, logic, and persistence will all help you understand this game wholly.
