Ops - Elite Yeti Video Tutorial (Nightcap)

There's a few tactics to employ to successfully beat Elite Yeti even in public servers filled with newcomers.  My favorite strategy is to use an attack-heavy character (such as Peashooter, Nightcap, Oak, etc) to keep my team alive and stand a chance of living during the boosted period (when you kill Yeti).

The video below will show the Nightcap version of my strategy and illustrate how I teach unaware teammates how to help:

GENERAL NIGHTCAP INFO:

As Nightcap, try to keep allies in Casting Shadows as often as possible.  If you have the option to enable the Piercing Power and Fearless upgrades, I suggest them, too.  As a rule of thumb, I use Shadow Sneak as a mode of transportation and bale out plan only.  I also don't use Fung Fu too aggressively/feel it's best used to gain life when a group of enemies is near (Fearless Upgrade) or as crowd control ; I prefer not to use Fung Fu for a primary means of attack.

VIDEO WALKTHROUGH:

PREFACE:  Some teammates don't know who, how, or when to attack an you can really see that during the first part of this video.  If this would've persisted, I would've used emotes to gain attention (LINK UP, HELP, etc.).

Notice when the Yeti Army announcement is made (00:40), I frequently look to make sure we're not about to be bombarded by enemies from both directions (instead of continuing my fruitless 1hp per bullet damage on Yeti).  If your team doesn't know to watch for this impending army, they'll likely end up KO'd when you need them most.

Feeling the flow of this challenge is imperative to success.  At 1:50, I take down the Soldier during my attack of the Champion Imp.  I was afraid Soldier would ZPG someone and my Peashooter teammate was almost dead. Gut reaction will be to push hard when killing the champ but SLOW DOWN and cover your basics/try your best not to get knocked out.

When you defeat the Champion Imp, collect his power and rush to the Yeti... Do NOT try to boost your kills or you'll waste time you could be boosting your allies attack time on Yeti (2:20 I run away from the easy kills).  While you're watching that part, notice I run DIRECTLY to my Oak ally.  This is the ONLY WAY to teach unknowing team members (without mics) about the DPS (damage per second) boost.

For the next 30 seconds, I try to move in small steps while staying centered around my teammates (all the while aiming at Yeti) until they finally all realize I'm boosting them.  Please note there was only 7-9 seconds remaining in our first attack wave before my team finally caught the rhythm/cadence of attack.  Sometimes, I'll walk by a teammate and watch them shoot boosted shots, step back away and make sure they're not boosted, and then return back to their proximity to boost the damage again.   90% of the time, they look at me and/or the red circle around me and catch on.  THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF TEACHING A TEAM THIS CHALLENGE!  If your team doesn't know to stand near you, you have no chance of winning.

The moment your boosted attack ends, throw Casting Shadows to help friends escape and run/regain your health (you'll need it very soon).  Once your health is restored, the army will approach (or soon be approaching) and it's basically a rinse and repeat event (until Yeti is defeated).

ADDITIONAL TIPS:

In order to get the Champion Imp to spawn, you have to kill several of Yeti's Imps and surviving these waves can be challenging, especially when you're only focused on Yeti. If a ton of exploding/freezing Imps catch you off-guard, they can KO an entire team so peripheral awareness IS KEY here.  (See me looking over my shoulder because I thought I heard a swarm of enemies HERE ... this awareness can sometimes be the difference of life and death).. If you have a headset, throw it on and take advantage of surround sound/hearing enemies behind you during these waves.

When the Champion Imp finally appears, it's a challenge to defeat him and stay alive especially if your team doesn't catch on quickly.  If nobody helps you with this part, use emotes to communicate (LINK UP or HELP)!!!  Again - I talk through my mic, too, in case anyone can hear me.

When attacking Yeti (during the boosted phase), if you have the power up, it's more important to corral your team and let everyone receive the boost than it is to keep yourself damaging Yeti.  Learn to mind your team and their health as you're attacking Yeti.  If you need health, back up behind a teammate and let them shield you from damage.   If they need health, move in front of them and shield them. If you have Casting Shadows on hand, use it to protect teammates by throwing it near them and moving to them (you can run super fast compared to Oak)!

Selfless gameplay is the key to success with this challenge.  At first, you'll have to corral a team into a group until they realize what's happening.  No matter what, avoid the temptation to rack up kills when you're boosted.  This time should be 100% focused on Yeti and corraling your team, not getting easy kills.

If you struggle killing the Champion Imp, remember to stay as far back as possible (so long as you're not vulnerable to the army) because it's easier to ADS (aim down sight) and keep crosshairs on him (as opposed to when he's up close).

Always run through All Star shield to destroy them by shooting the Dummy, when possible.  This is the same for Super Brainz' shield (seen several times in this video).

If you're the boosted teammate and your group is near Yeti and he knocks you back, don't worry about your health (unless it's SUPER low)... just get back in there and boost that team!

I can't say it enough - don't waste time on easy boosted AI kills and play SELFLESS to win (boost and cast shadows for team as often as possible).

I'm sure there's tons I'm forgetting but these tips should help you beat Elite Yeti (even with 3 newcomers) in a public server when playing as Nightcap.

If anyone has any questions/comments, please feel free to ask or add them.

  • @spIash_damageGreat clip, advice & very nice play, sir!!!
It seems Yeti has been making a comeback for a lot of us, after not seeing him for a while - I had him late last night.

I'll be honest, my heart sank when I saw he was coming!
For a start, I was playing Chomper, which would not have been my 1st choice for this. 2nd my team : I had two very new players, one a Sunflower who had been very good at scattering heal flowers but not using the heal beam, a Night Cap who had died a couple of times & I'd had to revive because the Sunflower didn't & finally a decent ranked Rose who had spent the first 3 & a half waves dancing instead of shooting anything!

Amazingly though, we defeated him! My team actually visibly stood back & watched me take the lead. They got the hang of attacking the Champion Imp & the first time let me receive the boost, watched me & stayed close.
The other times, the Sunflower caught on, took the boost & went into sunbeam, the others joining her while I did a mix of attacking Yeti & keeping the Soldier & other hordes safely away from them. (ADDED: I often make sure I take out healers first when doing crowd control)

The one part they didn't pick up on was the need to defeat the Yeti Army - so I focused on that, actually finding the Grody Goop was perfect!!

    Again, nice job, Splash!!

@spIash_damage  I loved ❤️ your video! It was very detailed and I watched it carefully, noticing what you did that I did not. Coincidentally, the 2 times I attempted this, I was also Nightcap (first time in Rando Ops) and found that there were many reasons I could have lost each time. I was surprised we lost, because I was even playing on split-screen as well. I watched the video and noticed a lot of things I could have tried! Next time I get this wave, I will employ these tactics!

@ToastedSarnie  Thank you for also providing tips!🙂

I haven't been in a game with a Yeti wave since I don't even know when but its been a whole huge lotta Ops ☹️ and actually even Elite waves haven't been very frequent. How weird!

I’ve had people (real life friends who play online with me) come watch me play and be rather disappointed in my performance... not that I’m bad but the difference in success and failure can often be the smallest things such as patience and perspective and have very little to do with skill.

If you’re ever stumped on a challenge, take a breather and employ different techniques when you return.

@asabaida  I get elites OFTEN but no so much for Yeti.  Oddly enough, I turned on my game and only had time for one round of Ops and low/behold, there he was!? 🤷🏼‍♂️

@spIash_damage I'm the same, often have Elite but think I've only had Yeti 3 times altogether.
I also seem to find I have spells where I've had the same boss popping up more often than any other, to then change to a different one more commonly appearing after a week or two. I've been in a run of Disco Boss mostly this week!
  • @spIash_damage This is great and immensely detailed! I honestly haven't time to look at it all now and it may be a day or two before I can play (things are very busy atm) but I will report back after giving it a try with all this helpfulness. I saw an email that I was tagged and the topic name so I wanted to check it out and let you know it is appreciated. This is bound to be a huge help and I want to send back a post once I (and my team, of course) win it. Thanks much friend 😁👍
