Hello, I can't play plants vs zombies any more... plants vs zombies game of the year edition from the EA app. Comes up with "file size too short" and then I try deleting my old saves. Now I get "failed to open file". I have tried reinstalling and repairing multiple times

See if the following helps with this one.
Please clear your temp files:
- Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time
- Into the new window, type or copy & paste: "%temp%" (Without the quotes.) > hit "ENTER"
- Now your Windows Explorer should have brought you to the "C:\Users\>your user name<\AppData\Local\Temp" folder. > Delete all files and folders in it.
- (If some files or folders can't be deleted, reboot and try again.)
Then:
- Make sure the EA app is closed.
- Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time.
- Type or copy and paste "%ProgramData%\Electronic Arts\EA Services" (without the quotes) into the new Window > ENTER
- Move the "License" folder to your desktop.

Okay, I tried this and was able to delete most of the temp files. But I do not have a EA folder, because I bought this game from PopCap before you owned them. I tried opening that folder instead, it doesn't have License folder, just "cached" and "drm" (both date to 9/22/2012, I think when the game was installed on this machine) and a "userdata" folder 2/10/2024. Also a Microsoft Edge "updates" item from very recent that contains nothing and I deleted but reappears when I try to launch the game (and get the same error screen).
I should clarify, the Popcap Games folder has folders for PlantsVsZombies, ZumasRevenge (which is working fine), ".system" also 9/22/2012, and two new .dat files. I opened the PlantsVsZombies folder and that's what I outlines in my previous reply.

@maddydumont Owning the game then vs now wouldn't make any difference. When you install the game through the EA app, it will create or should create an EA Games folder by default. If you install it through Steam, it may add it to another location but the license folder should populate regardless of when the game was purchased.
When you go into the programdata folder on your drive you aren't seeing an \Electronic Arts\EA Services folder at all. Do you have more than one drive?I just installed it on a new machine and it populated the moment I started downloading the game.
