Some interesting thoughts here
One of the YouTube channels I watch has a series called 'Death of a Game' and he recently made such a video on Overwatch:
I watched it and it contains no profanity or other unacceptable language so felt fine to link it here.
Since BfN has a lot of OW elements involved in many of the differences from GW2 to BfN, I felt this was relevant here, especially after watching it yesterday.
Two portions of the video really hit home for me; the push for E-sports and the shield situation:
The E-Sports push wasn't really seen in BfN, but I also believe that had the game done better and had battle arena not been plagued with issues of its own, they would have tried to go that way with it, just like they did with OW. I'm not a fan of E-Sports in any way, shape, or form so I didn't want it here either, but there was also a kind of push for that in GW2 as well with the tournaments. If 6v6 was rough to watch for fans, 12v12 would be even more difficult to follow, but I love the normal 12v12 of the PvZ shooters, even if battle arena was quite fun, and much more enjoyable than I expected.
On the shields, the Citron's shield in GW2 never felt that bad to deal with; it doesn't last long and isn't all that difficult to take down. I did play quite a bit of OW at first, but always vastly preferred GW2 and then BfN made shields much more powerful. I never really thought on why so many people were unhappy with BfN's shields until I watched that video and it totally makes sense once someone pinpoints it specifically; It's not much fun to have to burn a lot of ammo on shields as opposed to actually hitting enemies with them.
I also feel that on a related note that the change to healing in BfN is part of why I don't like BfN's Scientist as much as the prior versions; being forced to heal or attack and not both. One of the reasons many of us love GW and GW2 was that as Scientists and Sunflowers, we could heal and attack and not either/or. Now one can argue that the existence of 'assault Scientists' is a problem that plagues all 3 games, and I would largely agree, but the idea that I can support my team, and even with the healing hose change to BfN the Scientists can still do the assault thing, in fact its often worse since warps have 3 charges and are instant!
Part of why many of us loved the GW games is that while they play a lot like TF2 and other hero shooters that the devs not only used and IP we love; they went their own way with the variants and play styles, and while neither GW game is perfect, they are excellent and the fact they stood out made me and many others love them more than even the excellent TF2.
With OW languishing for various reasons, I'd not be surprised if there are more active players in GW2 than OW right now, even with GW2 not having certain parts of the game available right now; that's how much the game is beloved by the fan base, and why we wanted a GW3 more than the BfN we got.
