Inconsistencies with GOTY and some bugs that remain unresolved

With the release of patch 1.4, we saw many bug fixes and I am extremely grateful for the continued work on the game post release. However, there are still quite a few things that do not line up with GOTY, as well as some bugs that need squashing. This is not a complete list by any means, just what I have personally encountered.

Audio

  • The music that plays when showing the zombies and the seed selection starts a few seconds into the track when playing Adventure mode. This seems to be a regression from 1.3.
  • Sound effects are enabled during the "PopCap Presents" introduction screen. This was not the case in GOTY or any other release of the game; this sequence was silent aside from the Pool music and the wave sound when the logo came on screen. (more issues with this intro sequence listed below)
  • The "Ready Set Plant!" sound seems to be a bit rushed, with the sound ending and the music starting a tad earlier than it did in GOTY.
  • The sound from the lawn mowers turning into coins at the end of a stage does not increase in pitch with each coin like it did in GOTY. The coins all have the same sound.

Visual

  • The "PopCap Presents" intro sequence is all kinds of wack in Replanted. On top of the audio being wonky as listed above, there are multiple visual issues present as well. The "PopCap Presents" text is on screen for maybe one second, as apposed to waiting for the logo drop in GOTY. This results in the lawn being shown before the logo drop, which was not the case in previous game releases.
  • The zombie bodies do not fade out after death like in previous game releases. The heads and arms fade correctly, but the bodies just pop out of existence.
  • The seed packets do not show the sun cost until you are using them in-game. This may be a design choice but I'll include it here.

Gameplay

  • Plants still attack slightly too fast. Fume Shrooms are able to solo Conehead Zombies, and this was not the case in previous releases. The shroom would be eaten.
  • The game tends to take input from both controllers as Player 1 when in Steam Remote Play; I have to play around in the stream settings a bit before it will assign the second controller to Player 2. I do not know if this is a game issue, or an issue with Remote Play, but I thought I should list it.
  • Previous game releases had a dialog that read "One of your Peashooters was eaten! Try planting further to the left" that would show up if you lost a Peashooter during the tutorial stages. This is missing from Replanted.

VS Mode

  • The level progression bar can still be seen behind the targets in the corner.
  • The brain production of the tombstones is insanely fast, making it extremely difficult for the plants to fight back. Unfortunately I do not remember if this was the case in the original console releases.
  • Random Battle can pick plants and zombies that the player has not encountered yet.
  • The little jingle that plays when a zombie enters the house is missing.
  • The Sunflower and the zombie do not attempt to hold the controllers like they did in DS and PS3/360.

Missing Content

  • Zombatar is missing from previous releases of the game. Namely, GOTY and DS.
  • There are a handful of achievements from the console and mobile releases that aren't present here, and it would cool to see them make a return. A few examples include Photosensitive from DS, 20 Below Zero from Mobile, and Soil your Plants from Vita/PS3/360.

Again this is not a complete list. This is just what I have run into after way too much time spent running Replanted and GOTY side by side. A lot of work has been done on Replanted, and it is already so, SO much better than it was at launch, and that is cool to see. However as someone who spent at least a couple hundred hours with this game across the various ports over the years, it is still a little unfortunate to see some things missing or incorrect when playing through Replanted. I believe that this game can become the definitive release of Plants Vs. Zombies, but it still has some work that needs to be done first, and I hope this list can help the developers see what needs attention.

  • Don't mean to bump, but I forgot a few items in the original post.

    Visual

    • There are noticeable loading screens in all versions of Replanted. These were not present in previous releases.

    Audio

    • The main menu music starts playing after the logos on the Steam version of the game, when in GOTY it would play during them. Curiously, the Switch versions of Replanted have the correct behavior.

    VS Mode

    • The dynamic music kicks in when there are only a few zombies on-screen.
