Hello! I'm sorry you've been dealing with this, I understand how disheartening this must be to suddenly experience this.
The #1 cause of any device powering itself down suddenly while you are trying to use it is - Overheating, it is trying to save itself from damage. When a CPU or GPU hits its thermal limit, the system performs an instant shutdown to protect itself.
This is especially common during gaming because both components are under maximum load. In most cases, the shutdown is a hardware‑level protection trigger, something reached a critical limit, and the computer powered off to prevent damage. The most common reasons are overheating, power‑supply failure, or sudden power‑draw spikes.
Why “the past month”? Heat problems build up gradually. Dust slowly collects inside the vents and fans, and warmer weather doesn't help. Both reduce airflow, so the computer can’t cool itself the way it used to, and gaming pushes it over the edge.
Troubleshooting Steps to Try:
Please, help it stay cool ☃️
- Clean the vents. Gently blow out dust with a can of compressed air, especially around the vents and fan openings.
- Give it room to breathe. On a laptop, always play on a hard, flat surface like a desk or table, never a bed, couch, blanket, or your lap, which block the vents underneath.
- Listen to the fan. Is it running loud right before the shutdown? Or strangely silent? Either one points to heat.
- Laptop owners: a simple cooling pad can make a real difference for a few dollars.
Lighten the load
- Close other open programs and extra browser tabs before you play.
- The less your computer is juggling, the less heat and power it needs, and the less likely it is to hit its limit.
Check your power source
- Laptop: Try playing both plugged in and on battery. If one is noticeably worse, your battery or charger is likely involved.
- Desktop: Make sure all power cables are snug and note whether the shutdowns started after adding new parts or after the computer got older.
