Hello and thanks for sharing what’s going on. The tough part is that Windows 8.1 isn’t officially supported anymore. Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 8.1 on January 9, 2018 - plus technology overall has changed greatly. Because of that, some games may not load or may keep freezing, and there isn’t a reliable way to fix that just by changing a setting on Windows 8.1, it's too outdated (Windows 10 users will face the same).
I understand wanting to keep using the computer you already have, especially when a new one just isn’t in the budget. However, I wouldn’t recommend using an outdated version of Windows (or any other software) for going online. When a program is no longer supported, it stops getting security fixes & updates and over time that leaves more and more holes for viruses and a host of other problems.
Personally, I have an older computer I keep around for my old CD-ROM games, I just don't connect it to the internet. At times you can also find refurbished or returned laptops and desktops for significant savings at:
- Manufacturer outlets (Dell Outlet, Lenovo Refurbished, Apple Certified Refurbished, HP Renew / HP Outlet, Acer Recertified Store, Microsoft Certified Refurbished)
- Major retailers’ open‑box sections (generally with instore warranties)
Keep an eye out and take your time, you may be surprised what you find on sale one day 🙂
