Pumping in transitions gains little to no speed

Most of the core mechanics feel good in terms of momentum and ability to keep the speed of engagement up, but when pumping it seems to kill all speed and momentum that I’ve built up. It’s especially noticeable in transitions like pools or halfpipes where when you pump (or attempt to do so, the window for the pump itself seems rather small compared to past games) the game seemingly pulls the character to the surface in order to pull them to the next bump, but when the surface is too vertical (i.e. the top of a vert ramp) it suctions you too close to the ramp that you don’t get a launch off the top to gain speed and momentum. What ends up happening in bowls especially is a slow back and forth while pumping just to barely make it out of the bowl or not at all.
