Dogfight Balancing

I just read through the list of improvements, which mostly look great. In considering how the balancing will be affected, something doesn’t make much sense. From my experience playing the game, a hit from an ion missile on an xwing completely eliminates the shields, and with it over 80% of it’s health. Tie fighters on the other hand are simply disabled, without losing much health at all. It already gives an unfair advantage to one side, that seems to be ignored by balancing changes.

Now we will have ion rockets in the game?

While this may give more options vs capital ships, it looks like it will unbalance dogfights even more. I am failing to understand how a tie fighter and xwing will be expected to have a fair joust at this point. It was already a bit ridiculous to have an assault shield on a tie fighter. If the ion rockets are this effective against shields, and the same rockets do not cause the same catastrophic damage to tie fighters, it seems like this will cause some major balancing issues. As I understand, Star Wars was supposed to be WW2 in space. Using that analogy, tie fighters would be more like nimble zeroes unable to absorb much damage, while the xwing has more firepower and durability like a wildcat. If tie fighters have the great speed and maneuverability, as well as a strong hull, with the ability to easily down the shields of the new republic fighters, it seems dogfights will be unbalanced further with this change. I think it’s a great idea vs capital ships, but if ion rockets are as effective as the ion missiles are vs shields on fighters, it could be a serious issue. At least with ion missiles, you have countermeasures to avoid an ion missile hit, which is already terribly unbalanced if it hits as described above. From what I have read, jousting will be over if a tie fighter simply has ion rockets equipped. Ties don’t have shields, but a repair droid instead (ok??), that restores its health in similar fashion. Tie fighters should not have shields of any type or repair droids. Speed, maneuverability, with quick power transfer ability. Xwings should be a bit slower, tougher to take down, but more firepower. I am curious how other experienced pilots view this change. This is just my observation from playing, yet the balancing seems to be tilting towards the wrong direction in dogfights with the addition of ion rockets. The game seemed well balanced with the exception of the tie bomber and fighter hulls, and the ion missile advantage. This change makes it worse from what I am seeing. People were already complaining it was unbalanced towards imperial because the hulls are too strong. Now tie bombers will have shield penetrating torpedoes, and tie fighters will have ion rockets too? Thoughts?

  • "Ion Rockets are quite slow for a Missile weapon, I believe it is more an Anti Capital ship weapon."

I'm using rockets against fighters and it's fine.

in a joust scenario you don't care that they are slow or dumbfire, you just have to aim as you are aiming your lasers in this case. And forcing a joust was how you could kill a tie-interceptor in a a-wing, the tie-int winning all others scenario thanks to his superior manoeuvrability and speed. But not anymore.

  • as one who flies a lot in an AWing, it's ok that they nerfed its shields

I recently played 6 games, Won 2 as NR and Won 1 as Imps. I did get frags using the A-wing, but with my TIE Interceptor I got more frags with that 1 win. I am on the fence with regards to the A-wing rebalance. Maybe they could use a slight Hull increase or Shield quantity increase. I never claim to be a good A-wing pilot, but just sharing my opinion.

  • A-Wing has always been a fragile roadrunner with lasers and rockets, and the 3.0 changes didn't affect that.

I haven’t had the opportunity to dive into the A-Wing a whole lot, are the canons on swivel mounts?

    Wookiepedia

"The A-wing was equipped with two laser cannons and could carry up to twelve concussion missiles. While standard Borstel Galactic Defense models, the laser cannons were carried on a special swivel mount system utilizing hydro-servo bearings to elevate or depress 60° during flight"

It doesn't seem like the canons swivel up and down 60 degrees unless I'm missing something about the targeting or have the wrong loadout.

  • Jousting can never be fair (or balanced) when this games relies on health as a balancing mechanic. The starfighter with more health will ALWAYS win a joust. This means we can't talk about Interceptors jousting with a Fighter or Bomber. The Interceptor will always lose if both start shooting at the same time. Not to mention that if the window for shooting is short, the Fighter/Bomber has the option of ramming into the Interceptor....and survive! - this is a personal pet peeve of mine. We're not talking about a Corvette ramming into an Interceptor here. Why can an X-Wing ram into a Tie-Interceptor and survive the collision? Because of health that's why.

What makes A-Wings better than Tie-Interceptors is not the shields or whatever. It's the size. A-Wings have the smallest hit box of all starfighters. A Tie-Interceptor has a 2x bigger hit box due to it's solar panels. That's why it's particularly hard to hit an A-Wing, and if there's has a good pilot behind it, even more so. The consolation for Tie Interceptors is the power shunting feature - the option to shunt/convert all power to engines and get a full boost for a quick getaway. So in this respect, Tie-Interceptors are better at guerrilla tactics.
