Re: squadrons update failure

@UrBob1 I had the mee too button and just pressed it.

So far I have had two updates resulting in two re-installs due to exactly what is described here.

Since I don't have a lot of time to play it would be nice if a update just worked..

@Salvolin It would be nice. Takes me at least two hours to download if I have to actually install again.
I finally found that the 'Me too' button seems to be on the first post in the thread, and not if you are the person that started the thread.
  • Edit 30 minutes later
Forget what I say below. That probably just started my game without the update. Resulting in being kicked for not having the anti cheat running. Will just start the full download again and hope there are no updates tomorrow so I can play than

Another day - Another update  - Another failure.

But I might have found a workaround.

Not sure if all the steps are required, but here is what I did today

    1. Got the message there is an update

    2. Tried to cancel it

    3. Update downloaded anyway and failed

    4. Renamed the game folder

       from C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\STAR WARS Squadrons

       to C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\STAR WARS Squadrons2

    5. Tried to start the game

    6. Got a message game can't be found

    7. Renamed the game folder back to the original name

    8. Started the game. Game started to verify all files

    9. After verification game tried to update

    10. Update faile dwith that second message (something about corrupted files and repair)

    11. Game started repairing itself

    12. Game started

All in all took me around 5 minutes. Thats better than a 2 hour download I guess!! (and better that a 45 minute download too, hey I got fast internet :-)

New update, can't at the moment find which, but guessing it is 1.2 or 1.02 depending who you read.

Anyway, part way through installing the update it says:

    Game Update Error

There was a problem while updating your game. One or more files that requires an update may be in use. If the issue persists please restart your computer and resume the update.

Since I have just rebooted the PC, this is worrying. What file is 'in use' and how can it be in use if I have not run the game, just loaded Origin? If it is part of Origin, the installer should know how to do the installation from within Origin.

Retry is resuming installation from 43%.

    Game Update Error.

    Same as before.

Retry resuming from 90% this time.

    100%, Finalizing.

    Pop-up modal dialogue:

One of the game files is corrupted. Please repair install.

One of the game files is corrupted. Please repair install.

Game attempts to launch, then gives Launch Error. Unrecognised Game Client.

Modal Dialogue again, Easy Anti-Cheat. Unknown file version (starwarssquadrons.exe).

Also got a Windows notification to the effect that the game is ready to play, after the above dialogue appears.

    Dismiss failed launch window.

Tried launching again, repeats Launch Error. Unrecognised Game Client. and so on.

Get the Easy Anti-Cheat modal dialogue twice this time, and it turns out also; Launch Error. Unrecognised Game Client.

    Return to Origin game manager.

No 'Repair Game' option, just Update.

    Completely exit Origin.

Restart Origin. Ensure that 'Share system interaction data' is enabled.

Check that the Repair option is still not available, although the Update option is.

    Attempt to launch game.

Easy Anti-Cheat game launch does not appear. After a while the system returns to Origin.

    Try to update game again.

(Getting 5-5.5MB/sec downloads, which is upto 25% better than when I originally installed and updated).

Again failed update, at 47% this time.

And again failed with the 'One of the game files is corrupted. Please repair install' dialogue.

Attempt to launch and just return to Origin.

    Attached the install log.

Unable to find any events in Windows Event Viewer.

I can sent an Origin Error Report, but how to I attach it to this thread? Or is it just the InstallLog.txt i already attached?

Edit: I sent in an Origin Error Report, it does supply other information like DxDiag. Not very clever since I have to manually record the error report ID. An email confirming receipt and the ID would be good.

    Report ID is 126b22db0014c7b7

  • Further update. Still can not complete installing an update.

It looks as if the problem is related to downloading files.

I see Cleanup.dat_DiP_STAGED, installerdata.xml_DiP_STAGED, Touchup.dat_DiP_STAGED in the __Installer folder while update is in progress, but at the point where the install log indicates that there is a problem accessing Touchup.dat only the download staged version of the file exists in the __Installer folder, which is apparently where the update is looking for the downloaded file.

I ensured that ALL users have full access to the folder, but that didn't make any difference.

The report that the file might be in use is apparently not correct, one or more files is not available because the download failed to complete for some reason.

I have tried this with my Internet security disabled completely, no difference.

I am puzzled why Touchup.exe should be running in Windows 8 compatibility mode.

  • Got it to work, but not a clear solution yet.

On my system I use Sophos Home Premium Internet Security, and I also have Acronis True Image 2020 backup. Acronis includes an anti-ransomware component.

My previous attempts to get the updates to work by turning off Sophos did not work. Similar attempts with Acronis turned off also failed. Since neither of them was reporting any issues anyway, I didn't keep trying.

Today I turned off every option I could find in both Sophos and Acronis, and the update completed.

I still don't know exactly what the problem was, but both systems have complained in the past about updates that work in certain ways, mostly changing the contents of executable files in a suspicious manor.

If/when I get a more detailed explanation of the solution, I will update here.

PS If you do turn of security to update, remember to turn it back on afterwards 🙂

  • Just a quick reply from my phone to let you know I also use Sophos Home Premium.

I am not using Acromis so it's probably Sophos.

I'll see if I can set an exception in Sophos for the specific files mentioned in you install log en test is that works with the next update.

@Salvolin Got a reply form Sophos, quoting in part.

"To confirm, does this seem to occur with any other Origin games? Or does this seem to only occur with Star Wars: Squadrons?

If there were a certain Sophos Home component that were to cause this, I believe it would be the Exploit Mitigation feature. With that being said, if this does occur again, would you be able to try signing into your Sophos Home online dashboard and disabling this feature to see if that changes anything? If this does happen to be the cause, I can then collect additional information and get this case elevated to our next level of support for further investigation into this for you."

I haven't had any problems with other games on Origin.

I will try the above suggestion if I have issues with the next patch. Would be handy if you can check the same thing if you have further issues. Disabling Sophos while doing the update is quite easy, although undesirable.
Guess we have about a week to wait for another update.
  • I think we have two option

    1. try with the exploit Mitigation feature disabled

This is just to check for Sophos though because I kind of purchased Sophos for this feature

    2. Exclude the install files from your logging from Sophos.

This would be my preffered workaround if it works

If you try option 1 first and 2 second I'll try option 2 first and 1 second

Waiting for the next update I guess...

@Salvolin Only problem is that I have not been able to confirm exactly which folders are being used during install. The obvious ones are there or course. I set my origin game install root to c:\origin after I found that something was using the old style folder naming, and then excluded in Sophos. Here is my current list of exclusions:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\STAR WARS Squadrons\
    C:\PROGRA~2\ORIGIN~1\STARWA~1\__INST~1\
    C:\origin\
The first two are the same location. Don't know why anything should need to use the DOS file path in Windows 10, but that's what the second line is.
If you take a look at the "STAR WARS Squadrons\__Installer" folder you will find InstallLog.txt which in my case shows DOS file naming begin used.
The above exclusions did not have any effect on the problem for me.
  • The latest update, with the Mandalorian goodies, arrived.

I disabled Exploit Mitigation which got me past the first update failure, somewhere around the 50% mark.

I disabled Sophos general protection and also Ransomware Protection to get the update to complete.

Don't know if just Exploit Mitigation and Ransomware Protection needed to be disabled.

As always, remember to turn protection back on after getting the update to work.

  • Just so you are aware..

if you use the performance monitor built into windows and goto the Disk tab you can see files that are open and by what process..

Sounds like this issue was related to your antivirus..    if you can, i would add an exclusion for the game directory as it sounds like your antivirus might not be releasing the files for some reason

Anyways if you look and see in the performance monitor you'll also be able to see which file it is stuck on and is probably getting stuck on frequently.. disabling the scan for that folder will probably give your PC a general performance boost just on that alone

  • @ArzemnaThanks for that comment about performance monitor. I haven't seen anything useful so far, but I will remember to check when the next update comes out, if I haven't got a solution from Sophos in the mean time.
I did exclude the folders first thing. Check out page one of this thread 😉
The annoying thing is that nothing is saying exactly what file has a problem, and although it's narrowed down to something to do with the internet security, that isn't reporting any issues either.
Another point is that when the update fails it says to try repairing, but there is no way to repair the game.
Latest observation is that there seem to be issues with the game update itself, and during the same update process possibly with updates to Easy Anti-Cheat.
    It's a minefield out there.

  • The performance monitor will show you exactly what files are open.. once your internet security opens that file to read it , it is locking it and thats the issue you are experiencing..

the same may be happening with the update files.. when origin brings them down it may be saving them to a temp file location and your anti virus is picking them up immediately as they are being written..

if you watch that performance/resource monitor you can sort it by process as well.. so that makes it really isn't to see what files your antivirus are hitting and you should get a really good idea what its doing for any file.

You could even see the same files that Origin are trying to read/access/write and track down what is going on.

i haven't monitored the origin update process so i'm can't elaborate but its worth a short if you want to see if you can track it down any further.

  • The performance monitor showed so many files being accessed it was hard to follow. The Origin.exe on it's own had more rows in there than fit on my screen.

Anyway, based on what I saw I set quite a lot of exclusions in both \AppData and \Program files (x86) but they all didn't help much.

So I just tried excluding c:\ which also didn't help.

Only after turining off "General", "Exploits" and "ransomware" in Sophos Home under the protection tab did the update work.

Didn't get to play the game though, too much other stuff to do this weekend :-)

@Salvolin I have had further response from Sophos and they are escalating their investigation. I also told them about this thread so they know it is not just me having a problem.
They also had me run an additional test excluding particular .exe files from detection, which did not seem to have any effect.
My previous attempt at giving this information had a link to their support pages, but I don't think EA want me to post links as they said I needed to log in or some such rubbish and blocked the post.
  • I have a workaround that works for me.  Hopefully someone else will benefit too.

I have Sophos Home too and cannot see any logs or events that would indicate that there are issues with it and the writing of the updates into the executables etc.

What I can see is when I leave the Star Wars Sqaudrons folder open, I see the DIP_STAGED files and other files that appear to be the actual patches before they are integrated into the DIP_STAGED file.  Once I receive the first retry error in Origin, I go into the folder and delete any original file that now has a DIP_STAGED equivilent file.  I then rename that file and remove the DIP_STAGED.  I do this for the entire folder structure where the game is installed (not the program files etc).

Once I do this, I click the retry and it will resume the patching and probably stop at around 98% with yet another retry error.  I go through the folder structure again looking for DIP_STAGED and delete originals and rename the files.

I often find that the touchup.dat and cleanup.dat originals are not present but their DIP_STAGED files are, I think this is part of the problem but who knows.

Anyway, after multiple retries, and lots of renaming, I get the update to finalise.  Once this is done, I run a repair and can run the game again.

@Beleidat Looks like the updated files are named DIP_STAGED, probably supposed to be renamed when completely downloaded.
As for running a repair, I have had a message telling me to run repair lots of times, but only seen the option once after I manually moved the installation. (Repair didn't work on that occasion, had to do a fresh install).
Looks like Sophos blocks some activity but doesn't show an alert, which is not good. Disabling general protection and also Exploit Mitigation while performing the update seems to work reliably. Waiting for Sophos 2nd level support to come back to me with further updates.
  • running sophos home

    same issue

    fix, see picture

  • @zoufrInteresting. I didn't do anything with the AMSI scanning option, because I didn't think that the Origin Installation System would be using integrated scanning. One more thing I'll pass on to Sophos. 2nd Level are still investigating, but there is a problem because once you succeed in updating you can't update again until the next update becomes available. Waiting for the next patch now.

Update: Just opened Origin and it started downloading an update. Looks to be the same size as the last one. We will have to see what happens.

  • I have just received an update from Sophos. It seems a proper solution will be coming out in mid 2021. In the mean time, Sophos' support article has been updated with a solution, which worked for me.

The article is at Allowing games to run along Sophos Home
