What's up with the fleet battle AI?

Okay, I've only been playing for like 6 hours. I played the storyline on Veteran and have had a great time so far.

Started playing multiplayer fleet battle practice with my bud against the AI on NORMAL difficulty.

Are the player AI opponents like * or savants? I mean no disrespect but they fly like idiots into walls and then are able to turn on a dime and shoot with perfectl aim killing you in less time than I can even react. Like 2-3 second kills. They are somehow able to lock and fire missiles instantly sometimes. It's just pure shenanigans. I'm not imagining this as I'm watching the kill cam.

Anyone else throwing their hands up at this?

Are the devs aware of this?

  • @BigtimbersThe AI is pretty good - it's comparable to a moderate human, especially on Veteran or higher. It's there to get you ready for a decent human vs human match. Not to make you feel 'epic' for your ego.

Either keep practising or drop the level down until you get better.

And I have doubts you did the entire campaign on Veteran in 6 hours.

  • The Fleet AI pilots are strong.  But if you stay close to your squadmates and raider/frigates, you can certainly manage.

The times I get insta-destroyed by the AI pilots are the times when I either get way out in front of the raider when combat changes from defense to offense, or when my squadmates get killed and I'm the last pilot left out in front attacking a cruiser or star destroyer.  The kill-cams on those deaths usually show 3-4 AI pilots taking shots at me.  The lesson is to try to play a bit more conservatively than you might otherwise, to regularly check to see where your squadmates are at, and to wait a bit before starting an attack after momentum shifts - the first and only pilot into range is going to soak up all the enemy lasers.

  • I'm fine with the AI being as good as some humans, but the AI don't act anything like humans other than occasionally running into walls lol.

There is no Veteran or higher difficulty setting in fleet battles. The only option are EASY and NORMAL.

Yeah no, I haven't finished the campaign yet but it's been great! Veteran difficulty on the campaign feels great, but that's not the point of this post. It's the multiplayer practice mode AI that fly all wonky. Just watch them and you'll see what I mean.

The AI is quite good in this game, they even know when to Kamikaze themselves when the Morale Bar shifts to the Attack Phase of the Human players.

  • I think ya'll are missing the point.

Campaign AI Veteran difficulty feels way better than NORMAL on fleet battles.

Does this not scream that something is off?

To say nothing of how awkwardly they behave.

I mean, why would normal difficulty AI have PERFECT aim? And I'm not exaggerating.

They land every hit and like 4electricnomad mentioned, if you are in a bad position anyone else around, they have a hive-mind like technique to focus you all at once instantly. Not even real players could act with such foreknowledge and precision. I believe ace pilot squads could pull off something similar with a small delay, but we aren't playing at ACE difficulty are we now?

It's too obvious how they are programmed. Maybe if the lore was that we were fighting supercomputers then sure this might remotely be believable, but human? Not even close.

  • @Bigtimbers It’s super cheesy AI. Wing commander, Star lancer, and many others didn’t feel like that at all. It feels like it was tacked on. What is missing is a good coop mode in most games now. Too much pushing PVP and then trying to appease with a tacked on PVE. The developer Ian that I saw in interview seemed to really care about the nostalgic feel. Somehow I doubt this was his call. Smells like EA.
