Why is this game SO extremely CPU heavy?

I have an i7-9700K paired with an RTX 3080 Ti. I know very well this is an old processor. I know very well it is not what it used to be, but this is literally the first game that gives me a CPU bottleneck while staying below 50 FPS in 1440p. I mean, is this really justified? I always max out graphics settings that impact GPU load, precisely to try to get to a GPU bound scenario earlier than a CPU one and with these settings, I never go past 50% usage with this processor. And now this game comes and BOOM 85-90% CPU load in 1440p below 50 FPS. What is this?

Also, this is the first game in which toggling Ray Tracing on and off gives a 0% impact to the GPU, but all the impact to the CPU. It's like the graphics card is being completely ignored while all the work is given to the processor.

I don't think any of this is normal.

  • This game is more GPU-intensive than CPU-intensive (so far, anyway). I have a 10900K and CPU usage is 35% (ish).

  • @DarthFDG Definitely GPU-intensive here. My 7950X sits at 15%, while my 6800 XT is 99%. Playing at 4K, epic settings, FSR quality, ray tracing off. 60fps average, with the occasional 50fps drop.
  • Yeah, random points in the game (that shouldn't be THAT CPU-intensive - there isn't a ton going on) - bring my 9700k to its knees.  Man, it's a RAM hog too - currently sitting at 27 GB/32 with just this game and a handful of Chrome tabs open.  Any time I see it stutter, I can usually switch back to task manager and I'll see either a single core pegged, or the CPU near 100% usage.

6750XT, 1440p here. Also beats up my 6800S GPU, but less so the Ryzen 9 6900HS than the 9700k.

Doesn't matter which it's more intensive if it's not even utilizing all of you CPU, like mine. The game is CPU limited, I have a Ryzen 9 9950X and a Radeon 7900 XTX and neither of them reach anywhere close to 100% yet I still get massive frame time spikes regularly. The problem is that the CPU is not feeding the information your GPU needs to calculate the next from quickly because it is unoptimized. No amount of raw pc strength in the current market can overcome this problem.
