Perhaps, but I think I figured it out. I checked my steam account, and realised the last time I played was on steam. Returning last night I had downloaded the original client, not the steam one. From experience I recall that original and steam versions of games tend to conflict when it comes to purchases.

tldr when I finish work I am going to uninstall and then install the steam version instead.

    @LindseyFaelan 

    there is no conflict purchasing via website and steam at the same time, although these are 2 different merchants , so if you have issues with one the other may work ok
