I've tried buying a membership through steam, as well as the 60 day pre-paid code to try and renew my membership, both of which didn't work. I received an error message when I tried to input the code. and when I entered it again it told me that that code had already been used. why do I have to go through this every time I try to sub?

email the code into support@swtor.com from the email on the swtor account , will check they can see your email when they are online in about 7 hrs

You need to reset the password on the linked EA account that account has the persona xlenvylx that EA account uses a gmail email (email is different to swtor)
use the following link to reset the password https://signin.ea.com/p/web2/resetPassword then login on that EA account to fix the swtor account for purchasing
for future purchases, use incognito mode on chrome initially if you purchase on swtor.com to be sure browser cache and cookies is cleared
Support see no email from you yet for the code or steam purchase
