SWTOR Ping Spikes | Guidance/Assistance Requested

Hello I am having issues with ping spikes of 2k to 7k, the largest spike was 23k, without any impact to network performance for other devices on my network. It only occurs when playing SWOTR so I opened a ticket with SWTOR Support in game. SWTOR support advised to try the online troubleshooting and to contact my ISP.

For reference the ping spikes occur every minute or so and last 15 to 45 seconds on repeat. While this is ongoing if I quit the game and start up WoW or FFXIV or start streaming a game on GeForce NOW there are no ping spikes that go over 80ms (usual is 28ms to 30ms) but as soon as I log into SWTOR and select a character the ping spikes return.

Things I have tried:

  • Rebooting my computer and router
  • Official troubleshooting guide from EA (https://help.ea.com/help/faq/problems-playing-online/ and here: https://help.ea.com/help/faq/connection-troubleshooting-basic)
  • Disabled advanced features I have setup on my network
  • Disabled my homelab and stopped services related
  • Reviewed my internal network logs (syslog) and network hardware to verify it was not internal or potentially a bad Fiber line
  • Verified Snort was not blocking packets and disabled Snort just in case
  • Factory reset my router
  • Contacted my ISP (AT&T) and provided the screenshots from IP Plotter as well as relative logs from my homelab

After I reached out to my ISP about the packet loss they advised me a technician would be dispatched. The technician was unable to find any issues on the network. He decided to upgrade my router to the newest router AT&T uses. I spoke with the Technician after the upgrade and he advised he does not have any reports of issues with backend routing causing packet loss. He also advised me after running diagnostics there are no issues or anomalies within my home network or my connection to AT&T that would cause packet loss.

I have attached images from IP Plotter.  IP Plotter 1.png is from 5/25/2023 at 2100ish Eastern Time. IP Plotter 2.png is from 5/26/2023 at 1600 Eastern Time.

I hope someone else may have some advice that could assist as my ISP has advised there is nothing else they can do.

  • The highlighting was for the ISP I just reused the same photo. After further speaking with my ISP, I was being throttled due to a diagnostic error. They fixed that when they came out and replaced the router. However the new router reset my firewall and packet filtering which is why there was no improvement with the new router. I fixed the firewall back to my custom settings and forwarded the ports that were once forwarded and I am playing without any more ping spikes.

I am not sure how to mark a forum post as a resolved but this has been resolved and I appreciate your response.

The pingplots you posted, show no issues occurring , the hops you highlighted are router artifacts and not an issue

i gather the pingplots where taken when playing swtor ?

Best suggestion i have is if your playing by wireless at present, connect by Ethernet cable and see if it persists

    @RisenKnight97

glad to hear you found a solution

when looking at pingplots in the future, the hops you highlighted showing packet loss, it is only an issue for the path if the packet loss appears on every hop after it appears, if it doesn't its not an issue

the packet loss on those hops are by design, the hops you highlighted have not prioritised ICMP packets and are dropping them, your ISP network people would/should know this.

  • I just looked at the ping plot and realize what I did. The reason IP Plotter 1 is highlighted is due to this one (IP Plotter 3) attached. I am not sure why I did not include it in the original post, its been a long day haha. Also I promise if it wasn't for those screenshots they would've just made me factory reset and call it a day AT&T support from my 10 years of experience has always been kind of "eh put a Band-Aid on it."

I must say working as a cyber security engineer and forgetting to double check my firewall and port forwarding is a badge of shame haha. Once again my only excuse is it has been a long day.

Anyhow I wish to echo once again my appreciation for your reply and I am excited to get back in the game without the ping spikes.
