When I press play, a black screen appears and then crashes.
Hello, as the title says I am currently unable to play Star Wars The Old Republic due to the fact that when I press play, a black screen appears momentarily, and later crashes - or at least closes without warning. Then the process in the task manager is moved to background processes, and also inevitably closes. The only noticeable variation in this issue is the amount of time the black screen and process remains, although admittingly I haven't actually timed it.
Some things I have tried;
(NOTE: All mentions of Steam are when I was using the Steam launcher. I had later swapped it to the regular launcher incase that was the issue. It wasn't.
- Downloaded VC redistributable from microsoft since steam kept redownloading it as part of "first time setup", even when it wasn't the first time.
- Restarted multiple times, reinstalled the game multiple times, at one point I purged the game from my system, restarted, reinstalled, restarted, and attempted to play the game
- Tried to run in compatibility mode.
- Closed any noticeable non-required background processes, aswell as all non-required processes. I also combined this with the aforementioned compatibility mode test.
- Removed some odd Steam file in my non-Steam version of the game.
- As per PROXOS666's post;
- Opened the client_settings.ini file and edited it with the listed changes
- Verified the files on Steam
- Tried to repair on the regular launcher (It would not let me. The option was unclickable.)
- Deleted DiskCacheArena (it's currently there)
- Installed a Direct X installation
- As per SW:TOR launcher troubleshooting guide
- Ran the launcher as an administrator
- Swapped my launcher
- As per ALDER LAKE ISSUE FIX before I realized my intel is a generation 4, not a generation 12
- Downloaded the file as per it's instructions. It forced my launcher to open and close repeatedly until it stayed open and had to reinstall the game despite what the post said. It appears I currently have two slightly different game files now in one folder. Despite this, any strange interactions that may be caused by this are completely unnoticeable as the game is experiencing the exact same issue every time with little variation.
- EDIT: I have now attempted to use Alt-Enter while in the black screen phase. I believe it fullscreened it due to the edited settings that start the game in windows. The same issue occurred.
