A simple lore-friendly fix for LS / DS classification (no backend changes)

Hi everyone,

I've just started playing SWGOH 1 month ago, and probably like many other fans of Star Wars, I feel that the Light Side / Dark Side classification in the game is strange when applied to characters who are not Force users.

Tusken Raiders, Stormtroopers, pirates, scoundrels, Jawas, etc. none of these characters use the Force, and they are absolutely not “Dark Side” in the lore. Meanwhile, a lot of “Light Side” characters aren’t necessarily aligned with the Light Side of the Force either. They’re just… the “good guys” in the books and movies.

I understand the original game design choice from 2015: two simple categories for missions, TB, events and kits. But after 10 years, the terms “Light Side” and “Dark Side” feel more like moral alignments than actual Force alignments, and they no longer match the expanded universe or the more detailed factions introduced in the game.

So here’s a small proposal that keeps 100% of the game engine intact while making the classification more faithful to Star Wars lore.

No redesign, no refactoring, no gameplay disruption: just a terminology update + one optional tag.

=== Proposed fix (purely semantic) ===

1. Rename the two big gameplay categories:
  • Light Side becomes Noble Alignment (or another better-sounding name)
  • Dark Side becomes Hostile Alignment (again, any thematic term works)

These names still match all existing systems:

  • TB
  • Events
  • Missions
  • Conquest feats
  • Kit conditions (for example: "if all allies are Dark Side...")
  • Datacrons
  • etc.

Nothing changes mechanically.
The backend uses the same boolean flags. Only the labels change.

2. Add one optional informational tag (does not replace anything):

Force Affinity:

  • Light
  • Dark
  • Unsensitive

This reflects the lore more accurately:

  • Jedi and some Mandalorians: Light Force User.
  • Sith, Inquisitors and Nightsisters: Dark Force User.
  • Characters like Maz Kanata or IG12 and Grogu: Neutral Force User.
  • Scoundrels, Tusken Raiders, Stormtroopers, Pirates and Jawas: Non Force Users.

This tag is informative only. No kit needs to be modified. No mission needs to be updated. No balance is affected.

It simply brings the classification closer to canon while keeping the entire SWGOH engine exactly the same.

=== Why this matters ===

  • Tusken Raiders should not be treated as “Dark Side” Force wielders. They are not; they’ve been crushed by the fury of the Dark Side (Anakin’s wrath).
  • Imperial troopers should not be considered agents of the Dark Side of the Force. They’re just low-paid imperial soldiers.
  • Scoundrels and pirates are not Dark Side users. They’re independents or opportunists.
  • Characters like Enfys Nest are not Light Side Force users either. She’s a rebel, not a Jedi.
This small semantic update clarifies all of that without breaking anything.

It also gives the game:

  • a cleaner taxonomy,
  • more immersion,
  • more room for future narrative events
  • and a stronger connection to the lore, especially since the game now spans multiple eras and media.

For the 10th anniversary, this kind of non-destructive but lore-respecting improvement would feel meaningful and modern.

Thanks for reading. I hope this suggestion is useful to the team.
Many players I’ve talked to feel the same way: the time is perfect to refine the words without touching the gameplay.

May the Force, (or the lack of it), be with you.

  • Dark Side and Light Side just refers to their classic alignment, regardless of force sensitivity. That's why Jedi, Sith, and Unaligned Force User are all tags
