I always use 1 squad, but I drop to #15 usually. I don't mind doing a few battles to get to the top 5. Only if you have enough resources to max out 15 toons instead of 5, I would recommend getting 15 toons.
5 maxed toons equipped with your 30 best mods are way better than 15 toons who don't have max gear/mods. Focus is important with this game.
