As someone else mentioned, you're probably using their leader in your team. You can test that theory by completing an early area battle on all areas of the game LS/DS/Cantina and then completing a gear challenge. This should be the closest to a "reset" you can do with the borrow-a-hero system and see all of your allies heroes.

If they haven't completed a battle recently it won't offer you a character from them. Or it will bug out and show you a hero they don't even use/own.
