Just be resourceful. You don't need the meta characters to do well! I find panic farming to be more of a hindrance than a help. Pick an awesome squad and focus on that whole avoiding distractions. Don't plan on being top ten, but you can still do well! Top 50, and even top 20 if you play your cards right! I hope they figure out a way to balance the game with the new CLS takeover, but I try not to lose hope.
