I always thought Maul had so much potential in the first movie and was so neglected. I may try to check out the cartoon something I could watch with my kid anyways.
A lot of that is explained in the cartoon. It was orchestrated by Palpatine and essentially has to do with destabilizing the republic and instilling an intense fear into republic citizens causing them to become more reliant on and trusting of the government.
