In my limited experience with these pay as you go mobile games (which has only been about 4 years) the moment free players dont like the way a game is going they stop recommending it to their friends and new blood starts to drop. When free players feel nothing they do keeps them competitive they usually quit. When there aren't enough free players games ALWAYS die. People don't pay money to play a game most are no longer interested in.
Top 4 reasons people pay money for this game
1. They pay to catch up to their friends who convinced them to join
2. to help out their guild mates with guild goals
3. to crush their opponents.
4. To unlock their favorite characters.
Problems with hstr:
1. It has sent a clear message to ftp players who are no longer trying to get their friends to play due to game dirsection.
2. Its broken guilds apart rather then encouraging people to spend more and build their guilds up because the pay wall to get from new player to hstr is massive.
3. It has given their spenders a massive advantage to crush their opponents without spending.
4. New characters aren't really impacted. People who really want those toons will still pay but if their kits aren't specifically anti hstr there is less incentive to be spent on them.
I still love this game ans enjoy it immensely but the path it seems to be going down based on recent changes and forums has me worried it will isolate too many new players or players who don't want to be massive spenders which will lead to its downfall.
I remember when rogue 1 came out I got so excited with all these updates I went and saw it multiple times and recommended both the movie and this game to countless people because I loved the way different toons were released. That was the last era of updates that really had me excited enough to both spend money outside of this game and try to get others to play the game.
