I literally lost connection and it cost me an attack which I never even loaded into… is there no way to avoid taking a loss when the battle never even launched?

Depending on which attack it is, it can cost you the 10 points for first attack, which in turn can also mean that people don't even get a reward for participation when they lose, for example a small account against a big account not being able to clear a squad.
Then they should recognise that and send in another small squad to get those ten banners.
