How does this help you keep crystals? I have to do more battles, so it costs me more.
More efficient climbing for those with developed characters. Before it would take more that the free daily refreshes to climb at the rate I can climb now. I'm happy because less battles (for me) is less money to get a higher rank at payout. Anything that saves me money is helpful. Sorry we are on opposite sides of this equation, but I can be excused for some self interest when talking about a competitive game mode.
Oh I agree with self interest, jeric. Its only a question of which model helps more players self interests. I believe that more players want more flexible choices, but you side may be the majority view. I can only beat ~20% of the teams above me, so I have to pick and chose battles carefully. If you have good odds against the highest team you can fight, more power to you.
if you can only beat 20% of the teams above you, you're ranked too high. Improving your team would solve your issues.
