Given how stupid some people play, I had a simalar issue where I would take first when this other person with a same pay out time would Be out of the top 5 aka unable to move into first directly he would take second then pay the 50 crystals to move into first.

You can't reason with irrational people, if you need to knock him back wait till you will have enough time to beat him but he won't have enough time to take it back. That way you force him to waste his crystals while also getting what you want.
