How is this fair?

I don’t believe that this is something intentionally built into the game. That’s a bit far fetched imo.
But I get it. Despite what some are claiming, this DOES happen. I’ve had these crashes a few times myself, on a newer device and connected to a strong internet connection. And when it happens, it’s EXTREMELY frustrating. This is a competitive game and a lot of players take that fairly seriously. It can be gosh-darned annoying when something like this is what makes a difference in your overall outcome.
And I’m sure that it’s this level of frustration that leads to people lashing out like this and making accusations that it’s “on purpose”.
That, and the fact that this game does have a history of ignoring a lot of pretty significant bugs for a long time. There are still tons of things that we have all just accepted and “learned to live” with which should have been fixed long before now.
