Cade Bane is worthless. A Jawa team would get torn apart by any meta team. Snowtrooper is getting reworked, because he was hot garbage. They are all proof that you're incorrect.
Gear affects base stats, which is often totally invalidated by the kit. Nightsister Initiate is #1 for the highest physical damage in the game, but barely scratches opponents especially compared to the #44 character Rey, who hits for over 10k unmodded on non-crits. It's funny to see #43 right above her is Shoretrooper. Wedge, and Biggs are both WAY below that. :D
Kits overpower stats. The attack description can say multiply base damage by 4, or cut it by half. It can add an assist, or a double assist, or call the whole team to attack, or they can attack multiple times. It can give a 110 speed wedge an extra 45-75 speed. It can boost a 15k health/22% potency Sidious to more than 25k health/72% potency unmodded. (You can blow 30-35k health out of the water with a few potency mods on him.) And the ultimate example is a certain Sith Lord who can press a button, and kill an opponent.
These are a fraction of the examples of how kit>stats. With newer toons they have designed their gear requirements better. Kenobi for example has no gear that gives him potency, but has no abilities that depend on potency. Nihilus has the lowest physical damage in the game, but has no attacks that do physical damage. This is very different than some older toons that require expensive gear that does nothing for their USEFUL stats, or are wasted on terrible kits.
So the OP is completely right that terrible characters or just Ok teams that might be fun to build in the background are cost prohibitive due to bad design of old gear tables.
