The main drawback would be that it would dramatically increase the credit crunch and make the choices one has to make in the game even more difficult. Since the number of credits needed to increase a character's level goes up with each level, it will get more and more expensive to keep just your arena team at the highest possible level. Choosing to do that will make it even more difficult to keep up the rest of your roster that is now needed for all sorts of content (raids, TB, new events, GW, etc.). Having a level cap allows people to catch up additional teams that they want to use.
I'm sure you might not consider that a drawback because you want to be able to "differentiate" yourself by whaling or whatever, but I promise you that many, many players would consider it a serious drawback.
