Setting a weak defence will happen regardless. All it will mean this time around is that you are allowing other people to also get the character which as a competitive game. Do you really want that? My method would guarantee less headaches for the devs and still make the tournaments a unique character farm.
Plus if that is their biggest concern they can tinker with the recycle times again to mean that enemies cycling into your available opponents only happens every say 6h. So you only get your free shot 4x during the whole tournament
