New player, level 46 now, how to proceed

I recently got into this game. I decided to go droids and mostly f2p, only purchases so far have been 100/crystal for 21 day pack and droid pack.
However, I'm hitting the point in my new shard where it's getting difficult to stay at the top of arena. I'm making top 20 every day, but we must have some whales here already, because I noticed some of the 1-3 arena positions are level 52 already, with over double my normal missions run (they ran 3200 missions, I've run 1800). Obviously these guys are dropping some serious cash.
I made some mistakes, like getting 3* Qui Gon then switching to Boba shard farming in Cantina. Also, I invested in unlocking Nebit 3* from arena before focusing on my IG-88 farm.
Am I going to be too far behind at this point to catch up, or should I ride the storm and stay focused on Droids? They seem to be treating me well on offense and my Nebit works ok. I do seem to lose to fast teams like Rey and STHan and don't really see a way to counter them at the moment.
Appreciate any advice or tips. I don't feel obligated to be top 3 arena but it would be nice to know if there will be a turning point for my droid team. Maybe it will be once I can get B2 and JE? I'm not in a very good guild and we finish the raid slowly, but I have farmed some JE shards already.
