Not that I disagree with the point you're trying to convey here - I'm sure CG considers datacrons a win - and I'm pretty sure they've never cared overly much about the sentiment of players on the forums (for good reason imo) - but I get the feeling that a fair portion of the big spenders are spending on DCs just to maintain position. I can easily see top spending guilds putting pressure on people to get a minimum number of L9 DCs with specific stats on them and specific L3/L6/L9 bonuses. As a monetization strategy, I think that will surely work for a while, but I doubt it will have the same staying power of encouraging people to spend money on something they actually get to keep and continue using. Eventually the hamster wheel of DCs is going to start to slow as people tire of throwing good money after bad just to maintain - not to advance or get better or progress in anyway - just to tread water. This is just my feeling on the matter and I have nothing to back it up but I think it's a fairly sober assessment. I've never seen anyone say, "I love DCs and I'm happy to spend on them every month because they're great."

That said, I'm absolutely sure that CG views datacrons as a financial success. How long they continue to be is the big question and only time will tell.
