I do kind of hope that Ship rewards are not related to characters in that I hope we don't have to earn "ship currency" to unlock characters.

But I remember at one point there being some data-mining about characters with Pilot synergy. So characters like Wedge, Biggs, Res Pilot, FOTP, just got a lot more valuable I bet.
