I ran into the same issue. I now accept the free stuff and wait to see if it'll be a) good, and b) farmable. Remind yourself that you will accomplish more if you focus on the key toons you need to be successful. The more successful you are in other areas, the more currency and gear you'll have to lvl the other cool toons later.
