You should stick with the your dark side factions and focus on it. I'll admit, I'm as guilty as anyone else about being tempted by branching out - and only have been doing so more aggressively now that I have my Sith and Empire characters in place. But before I did that I really only focused on the factions I liked, win or lose. I was only lucky in that Maul was a toon I spent a good deal of time on very early in the game so I timed the meta by sheer luck. However, even if the Sith weren't meta, I would have still stuck with them. It was better for me to have good toons and see what happens than to have a bunch of mediocre toons with no real direction.
Hang in there, it will pay off in the end.
