So here's where I think a couple folks have it wrong:
You actually are competing against each other. Constantly.
Let me ask a simple question: if you were the first player to discover a new meta, that put you in position #1, and you could not be beaten from that position without the other players adopting that meta, would you use it?
Of course you would.
Now remember that the entire game is a resource crunch except for those folks who pay-to-win.
So, by effectively denying potential opponents payouts, you are limiting their resources to build their current and future roster, and bettering your chance to be in a position to own the #1 slot for a longer period of time, especially when a new meta is developed that requires toons that had otherwise been neglected.
OK, OK - sure. You may make enemies by adopting this tactic, but if you are confident that you can retake position #1 on a daily basis for YOUR payout, why would you help your opponents strengthen their roster so that they may be the one to eventually own position #1 for three weeks straight?
This is an alternate view, of course, but when you understand that "spreading the resources" just helps your potential opponents get stronger AND you are strong enough to get the position YOU want on a daily basis, I see no reason to aid in your own eventual demise.
You are in a game where the meta changes regularly enough. Accordingly, you can strive to stay one step ahead of your opponents and limit their resources, or you can band together to "share the wealth" which also works... until someone shows up on scene who is strong enough to NOT play that game.
Bottom line: arena is a competitive environment. Handing your opponents more resources in that competitive environment only makes sense until someone decides to not play by your rules. And, in my experience, that person always comes along.
But you do what you want.
Actually most of the people I encounter couldn't care less about the competition... since there isn't really any. Currently everyone can beat everyone at the top. It's more about collecting stuff and participating in events.
