The debate is pertinent.
Obi Wan fought for the republic for a long time, and the Empire gaining power by means of a coup naturally pits heroes of the Republic against it. The Empire is nothing but a SITH Empire - throwing a ruthless gauntlet over the galaxy (at least a large chunk of it).
As a Jedi and as a Republican, Obi Wan is a natural enemy to the Empire and the Sith, as both are the same.
A small thing: a cry for help in a hologram, is enough to put him up back into action, as he gets able to concile his sentinel duties over Luke with the cry for help for the Rebellion - with nary a word over payment or fame.
Old Ben was a Rebel all along, even as he was lying low, since he knew the Skywalker family was key to kill the head of the snake of the Empire.
