Relic Delta: A Running List of Unintended Consequences

So far, CG's responses suggest that they may not fully grasp all the ways that Relic Delta is going to negatively impact the game.

I doubt if we can change their minds at this point, but maybe CG_Meathead can take a look and see if anything is worth passing upward.

So let's make a list of the likely knock-on effects of Relic Delta. I'll go first:

As they stated, at a Relic Delta of -3, you're at a huge disadvantage, and -at 4 or more you should outright lose.

  • R9/10 becomes the only thing that matters, and anything below R7 loses any viability (for at least the mid-game and onward).
  • This encourages tall, narrow rosters, which the game had been moving away from for a long time.
    • Like the old days of squad arena, players' main focus will be to get one or two teams to full R9/R10.
    • New characters become nearly useless. Unless you can get them R7 right away, there's no point in messing with them.
    • RD will discourage developing new teams or working on fun teams. The opportunity costs will be too high compared to simply taking existing teams up to R9.
    • Galactic Legends' opportunity costs rise exponentially. Getting required characters up to R3-R5 will just eat up resources and and leave you with even more useless, nonviable reliced characters. Even the R7s reqs will lose value.
    • Galactic Legends will lose any "out of the box" usability. They ought to do something fun after all the work and investment they take to unlock. They'll fall to garbage teams with higher relics.
  • GAC and TW will turn into gear checks.
    • Putting a full R9 team on the front wall of GAC will win most rounds. A much, much smaller part of the opponent's roster will be able to touch it.
    • R9 walls in TW will be decisive. Far fewer teams will be able to wear down R9s with multiple attempts.
    • If the devs were worried about R5 Ewoks beating meta teams, wait till they see what R9 CUP does. R9 CUP will solo many R3-R5 teams. A full R9 team of random characters with no synergy will walk over almost any R5 meta team.
    • The role of strategy will be greatly reduced. GAC will feel futile for smaller players and boring or bigger players.
  • Conquest feats will be harder to get.
    • We can currently use a low-gear character to get certain feats (e.g., under JML with Wat). Under RD, they won't have enough survivability anymore for that to work.
    • If R5 becomes the enemy ceiling in Hard under RD, using high-relic teams may simply kill the enemy too fast to get feats.
    • Newer players with fewer relics are going to struggle even more to progress in Medium and Hard. Far fewer teams will be viable.
  • Guilds will get torn apart.
    • For mid-game players, any guild not getting aeros and droid brains in TW will become useless. Sticking with familiar but semi-casual guilds means losing most PvP viability. (No, adding droid brains to the scavenger will not help. The exchange for R6+ pieces is terrible.)

What other consequences can you think of to add to the list?

  • Stun/fear lock will ruin r9 cup and most r9 squads with no synergy. Yes, you'll have to be within 3 relic tiers to beat most teams, but if you have an endless TM train or if you have stun/fear lock, those no-synergy squads will do nothing while the enemy autos the battle. Even with severe damage reduction, going at x4 speed with no delay for human choice and they're going to kill some toons. This is all the more true if the squad also produces Expose, Thermal Detonators, DoTs, etc. Those indirect methods of damage dealing (to say nothing about insta-kills from CAT/ Nihilus/ JKCK) are not subject to damage reduction.

Your points are mostly valid, but the crisis is only 80% as bad as you make it out to be. If someone is silly enough to put a trio of bad r9s with no synergy on defense in GAC, you can still beat them without wasting another r8+ squad.

  • Just a small FYI in regards to Jawa Scavenger.
R6 fully crafted are decent return.
R9 might be a terrible rate but it's STILL cheaper than buying them w/ crystals.

R7 use Mark3 currency.   R8 check out the monthly 500 crystal packs.

  • Don't worry-they will release if (and do not give a s--t) until players that don't have delta lose and complain, then swgoh will develop echo for those people.  To make more money.

  • The cost of relics will be the same lol they are adding r10 simply needing more mats from r9-r10 anything below those relics I am pretty sure the mats needed will remain the same or less

I can't emphasise enough that these changes, as presented, will only benefit one group of players: Those who spend a lot each month. CG seems to understand this, with Meathead using phrases along the lines of "ensuring their investments are worthwhile," and dismissing removing the damage reduction at minus Relic Delta to protect the higher Relic Delta team. He also completely dismissed concerns about the removal of strategy and theory-crafting from the game, because this would be replaced with the strategy of deciding where to focus your resources. There's the leaked excerpt from the communication with the beta testers that explicitly states that the goal is to make it effectively impossible to overcome a Relic Delta of 4 or more:

The system proposed does not encourage healthy or fair competition, it does not promote a sense of accomplishment. All it does is validate massive spending. 40 out of the 50 members in the guild I lead have said that if this gets rolled out, they will leave the game, and reading through the responses in the forum posts, I don't think that's uncommon. My question to CG then would be, how will you made these big spenders feel rewarded if they run out of modest spenders and F2Ps to beat on?

Introducing the Relic Delta was pretty much the last straw for me. I closed my wallet a month ago waiting to see what was going to happen with RD. It looks like they are proceeding as planned, with small changes. I'll be honest, over the past two years, I've spend almost 3k on this game in the hopes of building a great roster and competing with the top dogs. And I did that, I currently sit in Kyber 3 and get 1st in Fleet with my Levi every day, but I cannot in good conscience continue to throw money at a game that continues to move the goal posts. It's not fun anymore, the daily grind is mind-numbing, and creates more stress than pleasure. I've made my exit plan. Once TB is over, I'm done. I'll save my money and spend it on more life-giving alternatives. I won't allow CG to ruin a franchise I dearly love.
