A lot of people were able to pull of Rey f2p on the first go. They needed to use their crystals for refreshes and save their energy for the double drops. It helped to have some extra crystals laying around for the shipment purchases of course. I was able to do it thanks to decent arena standings.
I am a little more worried this time since I will be panic farming 5 characters instead of 2...
I'd say it was not "a lot of people" but rather "a very small number of people" who pulled this off without spending anything. You either needed a substantial stockpile of crystals, or to be consistently ranking top 3 in the arenas to net enough crystal income to sustain it. From the perspective of the whole playerbase, this number couldn't be anything but relatively small.
It was possible yes, but it was an outlier case, and not the norm.
