You were close...
This kit wouldn't really work if she was the pilot. The synergies with Wedge and Biggs require Luke in the cockpit.
How I see this play out is Luke uses his X-Wing to make an attack on the Death Star (Original). The battle works in phases of the attack. First, a modified Commander Luke Skywalker with R2-D2 join Wedge Antilles and Biggs Darklighter to battle Imperial Tie Fighters as Gold team makes their trench run. Second phase is attacking towers as Red Leader makes his attack run. Phase 3 is Luke's trench run verses regular Ties. Phase 4 is the continuation of the trench run as Vader Joins the defense of the Death Star. This phase ends with Wedge and Biggs being disabled. Luke must survive the battle to move to phase 5. Phase 5 is Han's Falcon joins the fight vs Vader and 2 Ties. Success depends on defeating one ship which allows Luke to break free and blow up the Death Star.
The only way this works for Rey to have the ship is IF, and that's a really big if in my book, Rey happens to land Red 5 in this manner, the story would go...
Farmboy Luke pilots Red 5 in the attack on the Death Star vs Darth Vader Tie and 2x Imperial Tie with allies, Wedge Antilles's X-Wing and Biggs Darklighter's X-Wing.
CLS and Hoda on Degobah as Yoda shows Luke how to raise it. Then CLS takes it to Cloud City to battle Boba Fett in Slave 1.
Jedi Knight Luke then takes it to battle imperial (remenant) ships to save Grogu and Mando's team from the Dark Troopers.
Next JML battles Kylo Ren in the Tie Silencer before crashing it on Ahch-to.
Then Rey is given it by JML as he show Rey, the same as Yoda showed him, how to raise the ship. Then she takes it to Exegul to battle the SEE's fleet.
At least then the story would work, but the kit really wouldn't with Rey at the helm.
