Highest rank of day would also remove all this payout timing changes issues also. Not to mention the stress of playing for a specific hour (Which is horrible to fit into real life).
It's just a better system & if the concern is that too many free shards go around then reduce the max payout a little to compensate. You still have to get to number 1, you still need to beat a number 1 squad so I don't see the problem.
